"Weird Al" Yankovic joins the cast of "Halloween 2"

weird_alWord let out today that musician/philosopher "Weird Al" Yankovic, would have a small role in Rob Zombie's new film, Halloween 2. This is in addition to most or all of the principle cast from the first film, as well as Margot Kidder. Zombie most probably has adored Kidder's performance in the Bob Clark classic Black Christmas since it debuted in 1974. I can't really think of any other reason to cast the woman now, given her recent press portraying her as totally off her nut.

Anyway, Yankovic will apprently be playing himself, in a talk show sequence. The other guest of the program will be Dr. Samuel Loomis (Malcom McDowell), pimping his new book on Michael Myers (Tyler Mane).

Frankly, this is brilliant; it sets the film squarely in the real world, and pokes fun at how talk shows schedule guests who couldn't possibly be more different from one another to appear together. Not only that, it sets up a brilliant setpiece, funny and frustrating. I can just see Loomis, moodily spewing that "Devil's Eyes" bullcrap, only to be outdone by Al, hopping to his feet and sticking his foot over his head and singing (He does this in concert, and it is epic). The crowd goes wild with laughter and applause and Loomis sulks in the shadows. Awesome.

This isn't the first time Al has tackled the slasher genre. Look up the awesome Nature Trail to Hell from his second album, In 3-D, an inspired mockery of the early 80s slasher bonanza and one of Al's most overlooked works.

I feel that movies can be great in many ways. I feel that a great movie could be an artistic masterpiece or a guns-a'blazin' roller-coaster, pure magic or pure camp. There is another type of film, which I detest more than those which are horrible - Those which are mediocre, unremarkable.
