No Wit, Sherlock

This can't just be my love for Sherlock Holmes blinding me, right? The title of the movie keeps telling me that this is a Sherlock Holmes movie, yet I see no Holmes in it. Is this one of those purposely misleading titles that don't deliver what they promise? You know, like Snatch?

Even forgetting the appalling association to Arthur Conan Doyle, it still looks like ass. Sex jokes? Slow motion fisticuffs? Wheee, explosions. Looks like someone found the script to Wild Wild West 2 and slapped on a public domain character. I see no giant mechanical spiders yet, but if it shows up in the third act, I won't bat an eyelid.

To be fair, I was duly warned. It is, after all, a Guy Ritchie movie, and they did talk extensively of how it's going to be a new take on Holmes. Even so, this trailer really gives no indication of the fact that Sherlock Holmes is a detective, let alone the greatest. He doesn't even seem intelligent in any way. Perhaps it'll be different in the actual movie, but it does speak to the kind of audience it wants to attract, which hints at the kind of the movie it is.

Also, Robert Downey, Jr. is giving me a strong Hugh Laurie vibe with his deliveries (maybe it's the fact that Laurie is playing Holmes on TV, kind of).
