After a long summer hiatus filled with Comic Con, summer school, sun, and too many repeats on network television, I have returned to bring you your first dose of TV Snippets of the Fall 2009 season (which will be here before we know it!). An old friend (Summer Glau) jumps from one alternate universe to a new one, Dollhouse gives us a miniature (but amazing) reunion of Battlestar Galactica powerhouses, Project Runway returns to a new network and tries to make it work, and everyone's favorite vampire loving telepath demonstrates a new side of herself.
HBO's True Blood is coming to a close. The introduction of Evan Rachel Wood as Queen Sophie-Anne Leclerq is close at hand, and if the books have anything to do with the future of the series (which has been announced as renewed for Season 3, beginning next summer), Queen Sophie may be a key way to lead our favorite characters out of Bon Temps again. Still to deal with this season is the maenad Maryann Forrester (played by Michelle Forbes), and according to several actors on the show, we will be seeing a group effort of supes/vamps needed to finally deal with her. Lastly, the question at hand remains of Sookie's powers, which last week were introduced to fans. Again, if the books have anything to do with it, my prediction is that Alan Ball is going to be using Sookie's blood much earlier—and differently—in the series than it was introduced in the books.
Dollhouse will be returning to FOX on Friday, September 29, 2009 at 9:00 PM. You must watch this show. It's unbelievable that they were given a second season to begin with, and since they are still in THE TIME SLOT OF DOOM, please take some time out of your day to TIVO/DVR/watch Dollhouse so we can see what Joss Whedon has in his mind. To add to the fun, while Dollhouse already netted two Battlestar Galactica alumni in Tahmoh Pehnikett and Mark Sheppard, they're adding two more in Season 2 with appearances by Jamie Bamber and Saul Tigh himself, Michael Hogan.
Remember this FOX promo from last season, selling Dollhouse and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles as some kind of Grindhouse double feature? Well, now it's going to partially come true. Just confirmed is the long-brewing rumor that Summer Glau will be joining the cast in a recurring role. Details remain sketchy, but she will be working in the dollhouse and will have some kind of connection to Echo (Eliza Dushku) from their past.
After a legal quagmire that caused a yearlong disruption, Project Runway has finally returned to the air. With 16 new designers, it appears as though our precious Project Runway is the same as Bravo left it—talented, smart, and enjoyable. As with many (truly) talent based reality shows, each season the group is better than the last, and this season of PR seems to be its best. The talent and innovation runs deep, and nothing about the show itself has changed. It's the show we knew and loved, but they have a larger work space. Project Runway is on Lifetime Thursdays at 10:00 PM.
Glee will be premeiring on Wednesday, September 9, 2009, at 9:00 PM on Fox. Glee is a new series about a high school glee club. The premiere (which can be watched for free here) is charming, smart, and funny. Kristin Chenowith (Pushing Daisies, West Wing) will appear on an episode as a guest instructor for the Glee club. The show premiered its second episode at San Diego Comic-Con, which led to widely positive reviews. Original and engaging, hopefully Glee will find an audience in prime time.
Production on ABC's V has been stopped for 2 weeks. No one really knows what this means in Hollywoodland (the excuse was about "maximizing creative opportunities"), but executives have confirmed that casting will not change and the premiere is still set for Tuesday, November 3, 2009.
A remake of the 80's sci-fi alien show, V has some potential. I watched the premiere episode at San Diego Comic-Con and found it to be intriguing with promise so long as the show doesn't go the way of Invasion and hop into inanity land.
Sony has announced that they are not only out of new ideas, but aren't finished bastardizing old ones. On the heels of the ABC Family 10 Things I Hate About You show, Sony and Fox have announced that they will be remaking the classic film Heathers. Instead of making it into a film, though, they have announced they will try to modernize the 20 year old film for television. Gee thanks, Sony and Fox!
HBO has finally released a new trailer of their new comedy Bored to Death. Starring Jason Schwartman, Ted Danson, and Zach Galifianakis, the trailer also gives us glimpses of Patton Oswalt, John Hodgman, Kristen Wiig, and Oliver Platt. HBO hasn't really missed on their original series, so expect this to be another hit. Bored to Death, about an alcoholic writer who attempts to pass himself off as a private detective, premieres on HBO on September 20, 2009, at 9:30 PM.
Classes have already started for me, and millions of students will be returning to all levels of school in the next couple of weeks. This can only mean one thing: Summer is coming to a close and the Fall is just around the corner. This also means that many favorite shows will be returning in the next month. Stay tuned for a Fall premiere calendar.
