Fan-Made "Metal Gear Solid" Movie Sneaks Online

Three years in the making, the fan film Metal Gear Solid: Philanthropy is the result of hard work from a committed group of fans from Italy calling themselves Hive Division. How committed? Well, putting together the time and money to put a serious fan film together is an impressive task in itself, but even more so when it's feature length.

Philanthropy is 69 minutes long, and you can watch it here.

The film is the brainchild of Italian student filmmaker Giacomo Talamini, who co-wrote, directed, co-produced and edited the film—not to mention starring as Solid Snake. His David Hayter voice is actually not too shabby. He was inspired to make the film back in 2002 while playing Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Subtitled "The Overnight Nation," this is the first chapter in an ambitious trilogy, although the group isn't sure when they can begin production of the next two.

The plot revolves around an organization called Philanthropy, who teams up with Snake in order to take down Metal Gears around the world. Budgeted at around $13,000 and with the help of 40 other like-minded fans, it's a very impressive labor of love that overcomes the usual questionable acting and shoddy production values in fan films (easy to ignore when it's made for fans by fans—and free).
