Steven Spielberg could be delving back into the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle - if you believe the latest rumor about an Indiana Jones 5.
The area played a major role in the filmmaker's sci-fi blockbuster from 1977, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, with fighter planes that had gone missing during World War II ending up in Mexico's Sonora Desert - courtesy of some extra-terrestrial shenanigans.
Now, a New Zealand website called Stuff has claimed it has got word from a 'source' close to Spielberg and long-time collaborator and fellow Hollywood heavyweight George Lucas that the next - and possibly last - Indiana Jones adventure will center around the dreaded Bermuda Triangle, and its history of strange happenings.
"George (Lucas) and Steven (Spielberg) have been working on a script and it's almost there."
This may or may not be the case of course. But, Spielberg, Lucas and star Harrison Ford have all said they would be keen on at least one more outing, following 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which although, failed to set the world on fire critically, still made a tidy $317 million at the US box office alone, and $786 million worldwide.
That film featured the remnants of a highly-developed inter-dimensional alien race that made itself known to the Mayans of Peru many years ago. If this latest rumor proves accurate ETs might also be back on the agenda - as opposed to the strong religious tones of the earlier Indiana Jones films, in particular Raiders of the Lost Ark (the Ark of the Covenant) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (the Holy Grail).
Stuff's 'source' went on to say:
"Harrison is on stand-by for filming next year. This looks like being an emotional and exciting conclusion to the franchise, with Indy facing his biggest challenge yet."
Whether you believe the source or not, Ford himself said late last year that a script was almost ready and he was prepared to don the fedora again and get the whip cracking.
Bermuda Triangle or no Bermuda Triangle, there is little doubt Indiana Jones 5 will most likely see the light of day, and will be even more of a family affair than the last one which ended with Dr Jones marrying old flame Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) after it was revealed Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf) was his son.
"Shia LaBeouf has a central role again as Indy's son but this will be a blockbuster made in the old fashioned way rather than the CGI efforts of the last movie."
We shall wait and see.
