With The Social Network dominating the awards ceremony conversation thus far, the Broadcast Film Critics Association has announced its list of nominees for the Critics' Choice Movie Awards coming up on January 14, 2011. As you might expect, The Social Network makes a pretty strong showing in most of the categories, and yet it makes you reflect and realize how it basically lacked any strong female performers beyond Rashida Jones, who I'm convinced was added in as an expository afterthought when test audiences said they were getting confused by the rapid-fire pace of Sorkin's dialogue. Even so, this year's biggest contenders seem to be Black Swan and The Social Network, with possible underdogs in the form of 127 Hours, The Fighter, and Inception. It's hard to believe that the latest film from Oscar-winner Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) would be considered an underdog, but compared to the critical darlings of The Social Network and Black Swan, 127 Hours has been relatively low-key.
Below you'll find all the nominees for this year's various awards along with who we expect to win in a few of the cases.
Best Picture Nominees
- 127 Hours
- Black Swan
- The Fighter
- Inception
- The King's Speech
- The Social Network
- The Town
- Toy Story 3
- True Grit
- Winter's Bone
Best guess for the winner: The Social Network. It's sweeping all the others awards, it's a critical darling, and perfect example of a writer and director creating a compelling piece of filmmaking.
Best Actor Nominees
- Jeff Bridges, True Grit
- Robert Duvall, Get Low
- Jesse Eisenberg, The Social Network
- Colin Firth, The King's Speech
- James Franco, 127 Hours
- Ryan Gosling, Blue Valentine
Best guess for the winner: While The Social Network is winning the best picture and director awards left and right, it's not Eisenberg's performance that's winning the accolades (though he is pretty terrific in the role). With that said, Franco or Gosling seem like top contenders.
Best Actress Nominees
- Annette Bening, The Kids Are All Right
- Nicole Kidman, Rabbit Hole
- Jennifer Lawrence, Winter's Bone
- Natalie Portman, Black Swan
- Noomi Rapace, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
- Michelle Williams, Blue Valentine
Best guess for the winner: Annette Bening in The Kids are All Right gave her best performance in years, though the young and incredibly popular Natalie Portman in the current critical rave-fest Black Swan is just as likely to walk away with the win.
Best Supporting Actor Nominees
- Christian Bale, The Fighter
- Andrew Garfield, The Social Network
- Jeremy Renner, The Town
- Sam Rockwell, Conviction
- Mark Ruffalo, The Kids are All Right
- Geoffrey Rush, The King's Speech
Best guess for the winner: This one's harder to call not because there are so many great choices, but because a lot of the performances in question elicit indifference. Jeremy Renner in The Town might just be the frontrunner considering how much of a surprise the film as a whole was and the overall strength of the performances within.
Best Supporting Actress Nominees
- Amy Adams, The Fighter
- Helena Bonham Carter, The King's Speech
- Mila Kunis, Black Swan
- Melissa Leo, The Fighter
- Hailee Stenfield, True Grit
- Jacki Weaver, Animal Kingdom
Best guess for the winner: While I've admittedly yet to see True Grit, the current two contenders would seem to be Amy Adams in The Fighter or Mila Kunis in Black Swan.
Best Young Actor/Actress Nominees
- Elle Fanning, Somewhere
- Jennifer Lawrence, Winter's Bone
- Chloe Grace Moretz, Let Me In
- Chloe Grace Moretz, Kick-Ass
- Kodi Smit-McPhee, Let Me In
- Hailee Stenfield, True Grit
Best guess for the winner: While the core of my wants Moretz to win it for a combination of Kick-Ass and Let Me In, the critical acclaim lauded on Winter's Bone makes it seem the obvious choice.
Best Acting Ensemble Nominees
- The Fighter
- The Kids are All Right
- The King's Speech
- The Social Network
- The Town
Best guess for the winner: The Town or The Kids are All Right were the two ensemble-based pieces with the most acclaim, but I think The Town would clinch it in the end.
Best Director Nominees
- Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan
- Danny Boyle, 127 Hours
- Joel Coen & Ethan Coen, True Grit
- David Fincher, The Social Network
- Tom Hooper, The King's Speech
- Christopher Nolan, Inception
Best guess to win: 127 Hours won't give Boyle a second win this year, and with all the talk surrounding The Social Network, it seems like a sure win for David Fincher.
Best Original Screenplay Nominees
- "Another Year", Mike Leigh
- "Black Swan", Mark Heyman and Andres Heinz and John McLaughlin
- "The Fighter" - Scott Silver and Paul Tamasy & Eric Johnson (Story by Keith Dorrington & Paul Tamasy & Eric Johnson)
- "Inception" - Christopher Nolan
- "The Kids Are All Right" - Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg
- "The King's Speech" - David Seidler
Best guess to win: Your guess is as good as ours here, but we'd bet on Black Swan.
Best Adapted Screenplay Nominees
- "127 Hours" - Simon Beaufoy and Danny Boyle
- "The Social Network" - Aaron Sorkin
- "The Town" - Peter Craig and Ben Affleck & Aaron Stockard
- "Toy Story 3" - Michael Arndt (Story by John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich)
- "True Grit" - Joel Coen & Ethan Coen
- "Winter's Bone" - Debra Granik and Anne Rosellini"Winter's Bone" - Debra Granik and Anne Rosellini
Best guess to win: The Social Network.

Best Editing Nominees

- "Black Swan" - Andrew Weisblum
- "Inception" - Lee Smith
- "The Social Network" - Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter
Best Costume Design Nominees
- "Alice in Wonderland" - Colleen Atwood
- "Black Swan" - Amy Westcott
- "The King's Speech" - Jenny Beavan
- "True Grit" - Mary Zophres
Best Makeup Nominees
- Alice in Wonderland
- Black Swan
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I
- True Grit
Best Visual Effects Nominees
- Alice in Wonderland
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I
- Inception
- Tron: Legacy
Best guess to win: Tron: Legacy is a 2-hour visual effect, and it looks fantastic.
Best Sound Nominees
- 127 Hours
- Black Swan
- Inception
- The Social Network
- Toy Story 3
Best Animated Feature Nominees
- Despicable Me
- How to Train Your Dragon
- The Illusionist
- Tangled
- Toy Story 3
Best guess to win: While critics historically dote upon Pixar films, I believe Toy Story 3 has had enough time to marinate in second-thoughts and hindsight for critics to not automatically punch a hole next to TS3 in their ballots. With that said, while The Triplets of Belleville proved that non-CG animated features have a chance in winning this category (good luck, The Illusionist), How to Train Your Dragon will ultimately win out for being something that feels fresh in comparison to the rest of the lot.

- Inception
