With little more than 3 days to build up the hype, George Lucas and the folks over at LucasArts managed to generate a fair bit of mystery over their countdown to today. At 9am EST, the countdown cam to an end revealing the big hullabaloo - and was it worth it? Well, if you had to guess, based on your experience waiting 20 years for new Star Wars movies or new Indiana Jones films, do you think it was worth it? George Lucas's track record kind of sucks when it comes to the big reveal. Okay, that Darth Vader-Luke thing was pretty good. So what was today? A server crash.
Remember when Dr. Pepper promised it would give away a free Dr. Pepper to everyone the day Guns 'n' Roses finally put out a new album? Well the album came and went, and the day of its release Dr. Pepper's site crashed from overload. Poor planning much?
And so, you'd think that would go down in the public consciousness as a lesson for companies intent on hyping some big event at their webpage: make sure you have the bandwidth to back up your large gesture. Star Wars.com did not, but is it so hard to believe? When was the last time the average person willingly visited Star Wars' homepage?
So there it is. Instead of any big event after that countdown, just a few annoying seconds where they ask you to tweet the day until the site got overloaded and they automatically started redirecting to the foxmovies website.
Publicty Fail.
