Like a strange cross between Venom, Inspector Gadget, and the Green Lantern, Generator Rex is currently enjoying a rather successful run on Cartoon Network. And like any successful cartoon franchise, Generator Rex has received the green light from Cartoon Network to be developed by Activision into a video game and it's set to debut on the Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo 3DS.
For those of you generally unfamiliar with the concept of Generator Rex: Agent of Providence, here's the basic premise:
Villains, known as E.V.O.s (Exponentially Variegated Organisms), are infected with “nanites” which mutate their hosts into malicious beasts. An organization named Providence was created to combat these villains with the help of Rex, a teenager who has harnessed nanites within his body to become the ultimate weapon.
To get the rundown on the game's plot and our thoughts, hit the jump.
In the game, Rex is in a race against time to prevent Van Kleiss and his minions from gaining unprecedented powers that could destroy the earth! Players will fight through the depths of the jungle, the scorching deserts, and the heart of metropolitan cities, while on the lookout for blueprints to create bigger and better weapons to use in combat against the increasing power of the E.V.O.s. (Exponentially Variegated Organisms), which are infected with “nanites” which mutate their hosts into malicious beasts.
A game like Generator Rex has lots of gaming potential as the basic ability the hero wields is all about creativity. Really there's little separating Generator Rex from the Green Lantern (beyond the factor giving them their abilities), as both have weapons whose only limitation is creativity. The game could be incredibly fun, and yet there's one factor holding it back: the multi-platform development.
Hearing that the game is being made for all those different systems, of them only two of which have great graphics, it makes you wonder the route Activision will be taking with the game's aesthetic. Will they be releasing a really simple visual style that will let them port it from the Xbox 360 and PS3 to the Wii (where the gameplay could be quite fun - though now with Kinect and PS3's similar abilities, what's the difference?), because if it's a port then the versions for the more advanced graphic systems are going to suffer. Granted the most important aspect is gameplay and how much Activision lets you tinker with wielding nanites, but Generator Rex has lots of potential as a video game.
