Back in 2007, Sega published the game Crush about a guy who explores his own mind to discover the cause of his own insomnia, solving puzzles along the way. While I'm not sure anyone has ever cured insomnia by playing Tetris in their mind, the premise was interesting and it made for a decent title on the PSP considering it was essentially a portable pack of digital puzzles. Compared to the Nintendo portable systems, the PSP was considerably light on puzzle-oriented games, though that's largely due to how Nintendo markets its products as cross-generational tools by developing puzzle and IQ games to appeal to older audiences. Whether or not that approach works, it set enough of a precedent that Sega is adapting Crush as Crush3D for the new Nintendo 3DS, to cash in on the puzzle gaming craze.
Crush3D boasts new characters, puzzles, and levels. Obviously, the most important question is how the 3D element is incorporated, because if it's not - what's the point? The new "Crushing" system allows the user to shift a puzzle from 2D to 3D and back again to progress, taking advantage of a hint system if they can't solve it. The 3D concept could be a fun addition to the Crush concept, but it remains to be seen whether or not it'll prove to be more than a gimmick.
Crush3D will arrive on September 6th in the US and Sept. 9th in Europe.
Here's the trailer.
