If you haven't heard about Go the Fuck to Sleep, you are missing out. A nighttime lullaby children's book written for adults, the book inexplicably became a #1 bestseller on Amazon last month, before the book was even officially released. Well, it is now, and two celebs have lent their distinctive voices to read the book for you.
Take a listen at Samuel L. Jackson's reading, and then Werner Herzog's, and tell us which one you like better.
The author, Adam Mansbach, originally conceived the book as a jokey Facebook status update, after a difficult bout of trying to get his two-year-old daughter to sleep. Since many of his friends "liked" it, he started writing it for real, and voila, a publisher was interested.
The Samuel L. Jackson version is actually the official audiobook version, currently available for free from Audible.com. It starts off with Jackson in a hushed, friendly voice, before lapsing into his famous tirades.
For my money, though, the Herzog version is even better. There are plenty of parodies of Herzog reading children's books on YouTube, and they are pretty hilarious; but when it's the real thing, it's simply priceless. Go the Fuck to Sleep was released just yesterday, and at the release event at the New York Public Library, the authors played a recording of the book being read by Werner Herzog.
While it's great to hear these guys read the book, it's just as good on print form, as it is packaged to look like an actual children's book, illustrated by Ricardo Cortés. You can purchase it here.
A film version is already being prepared, as Fox was very quick to option the book. Maybe they'll get Jackson and Herzog to star as a pair of hapless babysitters.
