The Biggest Blu-ray Release of the Year?

Last year the best Blu-ray release was the Alien Anthology set, and Fox did right by the fans giving them beautiful restorations that made the $110 price tag (at the time) worthwhile. This year we're getting two equivalent releases. Sure, George Lucas is releasing the Star Wars films on Blu-ray as entire saga sets and as separate sets for the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy, but I think, all things considered, the release of Lord of the Rings: Extended Edition on June 28th takes the cake. Despite only being three movies, it's three movies whose total runtime equals both Star Wars trilogies together and in all fairness Peter Jackson's trilogy is a work of art in the realm of entertainment. And the totally remastered versions of all three films (even The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring) will be available, finally.

With 15 discs and a digital copy of each film, Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy on Blu-ray will be available everywhere but good luck tracking down the best price. Everyone will have their own "special deal" but you can expect it to run you anywhere from about $75 to $120, and with a $45 difference it pays to look around.

While you do, you can watch a digital copy of The Fellowship of the Ring that you won from JustPressPlay. Right here. This. That's what this is: your chance to win a digital copy of The Fellowship of the Ring. Or you can hop on over to the iTunes store and pick it up there.

1) "Like" JustPressPlay on Facebook (or click "Like" on the Facebook box in the upper left-hand corner)

2) E-mail us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it telling us who is listed as the screenwriters for the film on the iTunes store page for The Fellowship of the Ring.

The contest ends on June 28th, 2011. One entry per person. Many will enter few will win. By few, we mean 1.

He's a TV junkie with a penchant for watching the same movie six times in one sitting. If you really want to understand him you need to have grown up on Sgt. Bilko, Alien, Jurassic Park and Five Easy Pieces playing in an infinite loop. Recommend something to him - he'll watch it.
