Retrospective films on South Africa's unfortunate history of apartheid run the gamut in terms of form and function, ranging from the incredibly in-depth documentary Have You Heard from Johannesburg? or the Sci-Fi metaphor District 9. In the historical fiction of that vein comes The Bang Bang Club about a group of combat photographers trying to keep their head above water in a post-apartheid South Africa. Directed by Steven Silver (his first feature-length narrative), The Bang Bang Club stars Ryan Phillippe (The Lincoln Lawyer, Crash), Taylor Kitsch (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Friday Night Lights), and Malin Akerman. The film hits DVD and Blu-ray on August 16th, and in honor of that, we've got three copies on Blu-ray to give away. To find out how you can win one, just keep reading.
Risking their lives to show the world of the brutality and violence associated with the first free elections in post Apartheid South Africa in the early 90s, The Bang Bang Club tells the remarkable and sometimes harrowing true story of these four photographers, recounting their relationships and the stresses, tensions and moral dilemmas of working in situations of extreme violence, pain and suffering. And, while this intense political period brought out their best work -- two won Pulitzers – it also cost them a heavy price.
