Do It For Rosebud

It's been 70 years (plus however much time passes in the film) since we collectively mourned the loss of Rosebud with Orson Welles's newspaper mogul Citizen Kane. And while for the sake of the spoiler code of honor we won't discuss the specifics of Rosebud (though, you should have seen this by now), Citizen Kane (big reveal and all) has stood up to the test of time as an indelible benchmark achievement in the world of filmmaking. Sure, it's become hip to trash it ever so slightly for being "overhyped" or whatever criticism you want to throw at its feet, and there will always be elements of truth to them, but it made enough strides in cinematography technique and filmic storytelling that really it's virtually untouchable as a piece of history.

And now, as of 2011, it's celebrating it's 70th anniversary. Today, Warner Brothers released the mammoth Blu-ray set in honor of the occasion (our review to follow shortly), and has also made the newly remastered version of Citizen Kane available through the iTunes Store. As our own show of respect, we're giving away a digital download copy of Citizen Kane, and if you want a chance to win it, just keep reading.

The story is a film à clef that examines the life and legacy of Charles Foster Kane, played by Welles, a character based upon the American newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst and Welles' own life. Narrated principally through flashbacks, the story is revealed through the research of a newsreel reporter seeking to solve the mystery of the newspaper magnate's dying word: "Rosebud."

He's a TV junkie with a penchant for watching the same movie six times in one sitting. If you really want to understand him you need to have grown up on Sgt. Bilko, Alien, Jurassic Park and Five Easy Pieces playing in an infinite loop. Recommend something to him - he'll watch it.
