Pop culture has given us many takes on mankind's transportation innovation known as the train; whether you're going off the rails on a crazy one or hallucinating that trains are talking to your children on PBS, they've remained a meaningful part of modern culture. And yet, some of the best films and television shows concentrate more on the industrial legacy that laid the tracks across the face of the country. On the funny side you have Blazing Saddles, and then, on the more badass serious side you have AMC's Hell on Wheels, a look at the wild, corrupt culture surrounding the construction of America's first transnational system of travel. Despite great performances by Anson Mount, Colm Meaney, Common and others, and some epic writing, Hell on Wheels's first season failed to gather as much steam as its other AMC compatriots when it came to public awareness.
To help fix that and prepare you for its imminent second season, we're giving away one copy of the premiere season on Blu-ray.
Hell on Wheels tells the epic story of post-Civil War America, focusing on a soldier who sets out to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who have killed his wife. His journey takes him west to Hell on Wheels, a dangerous, raucous, lawless melting pot of a town that travels with and services the construction of the railroad, an engineering feat unprecedented for its time. The lavishly-produced series documents the railroad’s engineering and construction, as well as institutionalized greed and corruption, the immigrant experience and the plight of newly emancipated African-Americans during Reconstruction. Chronicling this potent turning point in our nation’s history, this fan favorite series shows just how uncivilized the business of civilization can be across 10 absorbing episodes.
