Music Video Spotlight: 2CELLOS

2cellos_banner

I'm always a fan when musicians with more "classical" instruments find a way to take something contemporary and remake it in their own image. 2CELLOS debuted their rendition of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" (see below) on May 24th on YouTube, and now, not more than two weeks later they're back with another cover: Guns N' Roses "Welcome to the Jungle". While I'm not sure if it tops the chilling sound of "Smooth Criminal"'s piercing rapid-fire strings, it's a nice juxtaposition of Guns N' Roses into new terrain. 2CELLOS is Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, two 24-year-olds from Croatia*  with an apparent love of American 80s music. I think a large part of why this works is the rapid tempo of each song, but I've included the track list off their forthcoming album 2CELLOS, and you can see there are some slower tracks on there, and I'm interested to hear how well they work.

Barry Manilow's 10-Year Studio Itch

barry_manilow_15_minutes_banner

On June 14th, Barry Manilow releases 15 Minutes, his first studio album in a decade. Manilow has spent the last two years in the studio with lyricist Enoch Anderson working on the album, and the guitar-focused album covers a theme that's become all too prevalent in artist albums lately: dealing with fame, the title inspired by Andy Warhol's "fifteen minutes of fame" quote.

Manilow explains the album thusly:

Fame and success are something we all strive for, and yet when we get it how do we behave? That question jumps out at us daily from magazine covers, TV news and online gossip sites. In my world of entertainment, I’ve watched perfectly decent and talented people achieve the success they’ve been striving for only to crash and burn as their star rises. It happens in every walk of life, not only in the entertainment field; in sports, in politics and in daily life when the assistant manager gets promoted at the grocery store. It’s something that continues to fascinate us, and for me it represented an interesting musical journey to explore.

Music Video Spotlight: Black Veil Brides

black_veil_brides_banner

As often as we can remember to (we dare not make promises of consistency), we'll be highlighting artists that have either been recommended to us, we've stumbled across organically, or however. And, since we figure music videos give you something to entertain the eyes in your head, this is a fun way to introduce new artists to new people...so here we go.

Ohio can be hardcore, or at least people from Ohio can be. Ohio as an entity, not so much. Black Veil Brides, with elements of post-hardcore, glam metal and hard rock all rolled into one, are a 5-man group from Cincinnati including Andrew Dennis Biersack (lead vocals), Ashley Purdy (bass, vocals), Jake Pitts (lead guitar), Jeremy Miles Ferguson (guitar, violin), and Christian "CC" Coma (drums). Dressed in garb that would make KISS proud, Black Veil Brides are on their 4th studio album, Set the World on Fire, which will be releasing on June 14th. Here's the video for their first single off the album, "The Legacy".

Music Video Spotlight: Jared Evan

jared_evan_banner

As often as we can remember to (we dare not make promises of consistency), we'll be highlighting artists that have either been recommended to us, we've stumbled across organically, or however. And, since we figure music videos give you something to entertain the eyes in your head, this is a fun way to introduce new artists to new people...so here we go.

To be frank, save for the video we're looking at today, there's not much to be said about the creativity in Jared Evan's music videos; they're basic pieces with him rhyming into the camera in a way anyone familiar with rap and hip hop music videos has seen time and time again. Then we have "The Light" and the difference between this music video and his others is like the difference between night and day. Both musically and visually, "The Light" has a vibrant feel that his other tracks just can't match. Fans of his traditional low-key beats and melodies laced with his lyrics will notice within the first few seconds of "The Light" that it's much more techno inspired. However, it's the visuals of the video that will make you choose the video as the best way to enjoy this track. For the music video, Jared Evan teamed up with performance painter David Garibaldi to create a portrait of Jared in time with the music.

Lady Gaga's Born This Way hit shelves, both physically and digitally, on May 23rd and it sold well. Correction: It's selling well. It'll probably continue to do so. Headlined by the tracks "Judas", "Born This Way", and "Marry the Night", the album has already had plenty of success with its singles and "Judas" and "Born This Way" have each enjoyed their time in the sun. Furthermore, Gaga's been on tour for the last year and a half and has been raking in fandom through appearances on Oprah and with covers of her music appearing on Glee. To celebrate the release, JustPressPlay is giving away two copies of the Special Edition of Born This Way.

"Stockholm Syndrome" - The Message of Derek Webb

webb1

If you have never seen Derek Webb perform, or heard his music, you are not alone. If you have never heard a song he’s sung, written, or collaborated on, you are still in the high majority. You are however, missing out. I’ve been an admirer of Webb, his tunes, and the message his music carries for many years. Like most though, I have never bought an album (or stole one from an online music source), nor have I spent much time checking his tour schedule. If I had, I might have noticed the heart and the many hours he’s put into his music for the better part of two decades; tirelessly playing shows where he can get them, lending himself to whomever will listen, and writing his music out of the conviction that he is serving a purpose. What is plainly clear, but not so easily noticed, is exactly who Derek Webb is trying to be.
