Earlier this month, several mock covers of real magazines with Dexter on them were seen on the show's official Facebook group. Apparently Showtime took the concept further than a cover and actually published these mags—though they're only about 6 pages long. These magazines were available for "purchase" at the Dexter Newsstand. What tickles me is the articles inside, made to look exactly like the articles on the magazine it's parodying. The Rolling Stone one has interviews with Dexter and new character A.D.A. Miguel Prado, wine and dine spots in Miami, Dexter's own sandwich recipe, a list of must-have tools for murdering people, and mini-reviews ofShowtime's other shows and movies. The Us Weekly one has articles like "Law Enforcement Hotties", "Dexter's 5 Signs You're Dating a Serial Killer", "Dating Horror Stories", hairstyles and clothes of the women in Dexter, and a poll asking if Rita and Dexter should tie the knot.
This marketing is meant to suggest that the character is “a celebrity, part of popular culture, a cover boy,” according to Len Fogge, executive vice president for creative marketing, research and digital media at Showtime. It's hilarious to read these, really. I love this marketing and I wish they would make more. Here are the other magazine cover parodies. They are spoofs of Rolling Stone, Us Weekly, Esquire, GQ, Wired, The New Yorker, Details, Interview, Los Angeles Magazine and Vanity Fair. Try and guess which one's which. |
