Instead of pouring one out for the late Kansas City Barbeque, show your respect for the legendary Top Gun bar by jamming out on your fake plastic guitar. Activision has announced that, in celebration of July 4, Xbox360 or PS3 Guitar Hero III owners will be able to download the Top Gun theme for free on Thursday. I know, I was hoping to fly into the Danger Zone, myself, but free is free, right?  Join me in basking in  nostalgia for a movie that came out before I was one year old.

Say what you will about GHIII's embarassing collection of DLC compared to Rock Band, but at least they've been pretty cool about free music. Just last week we got the World of Warcraft track "I am Murloc", not to mention the three-song Dropkick Murphy's pack, Aerosmith's "Dream On", the Halo 3 theme, and even a special Christmas song. Here's hoping they keep up the trend with Guitar Hero: World Tour.

SANTA MONICA, CA – July 1, 2008 – Grab your wingman and fire up the F-14 for the announcement today of a special Fourth of July treat for Activision, Inc.’s (Nasdaq: ATVI) Guitar Hero III®: Legends of Rock fans. Beginning July 3, 2008, the legendary, GRAMMY® award-winning “Top Gun Anthem” will be available as a free downloadable song for the game.

The instrumental, guitar-heavy theme was immortalized in the hit film that inspired a generation of young men to awkwardly serenade women at bars, perform perfectly-timed “flipside” high fives and threaten to “buzz the tower.”

The song will be available as a free download to Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock mavericks and their wingmen everywhere for Xbox LIVE® Marketplace for Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and in the PLAYSTATION®Store for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system on July 3, 2008.
