MGS4 Undertakes Mission To Save PS3 PDF Print E-mail

Back in the late '90s Metal Gear Solid was one of those games you just had to own. If you didn't already have a Playstation in your possession, this game was a reason to purchase one. Some site Hideo Kojima's masterpiece as a big reason why Sony "won" the console war at the turn of the century.

Now fast forward a decade later, where the fourth installment of the famed Metal Gear Solid series hopes to again save Sony's newest console, the Playstation 3.

Metal Gear Solid 4 hit store shelves last month in a flurry of anticipation. The game received mountains of solid reviews upon it's release, including a perfect 10 from here at JPP. But the game has been more than just a critical darling, it's sold and sold well. Metal Gear Solid 4 pushed 774,600 units out the door in June, making it the number one selling game of the month. And, just as Sony had hoped, the game finally gave gamers an incentive to go out and buy the PS3 console.

The PS3 sales numbers skyrocketed in the month of June. According to Gamespot News, the PS3 sold over 405,000 units that month, nearly double ofwhat the rival XBox 360 sold. Not only that, but those sales numbers were the highest of a non-holiday month in PS3 history.

Analyst Anita Frazier reiterated the facts,
"As expected, Metal Gear Solid 4 realized significant retail sales and drove PS3 hardware acquisition while the.. media report does not include units bundled with hardware; if included, MGS4 sold-through nearly 1 million units."

This time around though, Sony's quest to put Playstation on top of the video game world may very well be an insurmountable task. With XBox 360's already strong fan base and Wii's seemingly universal mass appeal, the PS3 may be destined for a last place finish. Sadly enough, this may be a mission even too tall for Solid Snake.

 What a shame, if you ask me. I've always been a Playstation fan, as I owned a ps1 ever since I was a little child, and I felt as if the Playstation was always a role model for the other companies to copy/follow. Where did Sony go wrong? Did it go wrong by releasing the console 1 year after the 360? Or by charging more for its console? Or where? And which of the consoles is more powerful anyway when it comes to games? As I read many articles about this, many of which clearly seem to be biased towards one side or the other.

 I think when it comes right down to it it's all about the software. The 360 has just had more exclusive games that people want. (Halo3, Bioshock, etc.)

I agree with you though Dark, I hope the PS3 can make a big comeback.

 I think the only hope the PS3 really has is the incoming obsolescence of the Xbox 360. As it is programmers are hesitant to program for the PS3 because it's so much work...thus the furthest the current PS3 software has gone is as far as the capabilities of the Xbox 360...but the real future for the PS3 comes in when a game developer embraces the PS3 hardware and creates a game that REALLY shows off it's potential. Even FF13, which should have been that title - isn't going to since they've opted to make it multi-console - meaning they're only going to take the PS3 programming as far as is necessary to double over on to the Xbox...kinda sucks
