Weekly Indie Game Update!
Written by Josh Coffey
Saturday, 15 November 2008

Here's something new: A weekly indie game update! Every week I, Joshua Coffey, will post all news of any in-development indie games I find. This is an experiment, so please post what you think of weekly indie game updates. This week, we've got news on OverGrowth, Crayon Physics Deluxe, Zompocalypse, and Cortex Command.

Wolfire recently updated their blog and posted some interesting info about Overgrowth, a rabbit ninja kickass game. I quote:

"Here is a desert environment for Overgrowth. In addition to using real world data, we are using a program called World Machine 2 (WM2) to add erosion details and other small scale features. WM2 allow for fast, high quality results and lots of unique detail with less effort. The program is also free for non-commercial use, so people should be able to use it for their own mods once the game is out."

They also added a video that shows off the new blood engine. It looks really flashy!

You can see a few pictures at their blog, as well as a lot of other information about this amazing up-and-coming game.

Crayon Physics Deluxe

Developed by Petri Purho, CrayonPhysics Deluxe is a physics-based puzzle game. Draw shapes that magically bounce and move around just like in the real world. Your goal? Get the ball to the star. Crayon Physics Deluxe recently became available for preorder. Those who preorder get a generous $5 discount. You can read more about Crayon Physics Deluxe at its website.

Zompocalypse may be developed by (rather) small and unknown developers, but it's certainly worth a mention. The game was released a few weeks ago for a mere $9.995. The developer is a company called ToadTrip, and they plan to release many more episodes. Check it out!

Cortex Command

Cortex Command

If you haven't heard of Cortex Command, you're either living under a tree, or you're an unfortunate fellow! Build 22 has been released, and it has a ton of new features! Here's a quote:

Build 22 is out! You should be able to install it over previous versions without problems.

This is a big one, especially on the content side. Highlights include:

  • TONS of new official weapons and actors implemented thanks to new content producers Capnbubs and Numgun - most of the balancing, costs, and audio effects are still works in progress.
  • Lots of new exclusive and amazing in-game music thanks to DannyB of dB Soundworks. More on this later!
  • Completely new, completely awesome full-blown mission with almost completely hand-painted environment!
  • Vastly more interesting and reactive AI actor behavior
  • AI GO-TO mode waypoints can lock onto moving actors - make squads move in groups!
  • 2X Windowed mode for easier to read fonts and screen action
  • Buy menu lists are now grouped into data modules/factions
  • Description popups for almost every item
  • Items and actors can now be loaded into Craft!
  • New installer will ask if you want to remove EVERYTHING or leave your installed mods and settings
  • Lots more I can’t remember right now

Cortex command is one of the most fun pixel-physics action-oriented indie game one will ever play! It costs a measley $18.00, or $38.00 for the "support Data Realms" version, which seems to give nothing extra. Be sure to bookmark the blog!
