Awesome: Grassroots Campaign for "The Dark Knight"

oscarsWarner Bros may have been pushing for The Dark Knight's Oscar nomination in their own way, but there's another group aggressively pushing for the film to get some Oscar recognition: the fans.

The site DarkCampaign.com is an attempt to show fan support for the film and lobby for Academy voters to give the film their consideration. They've edited a 4-minute long video to showcase why they believe The Dark Knight is indeed the best film of 2008.

I'll let their mission statement explain their goal:

But why care whether it gets an Oscar?

Well because it’s a part of history.  If “The Dark Knight” is the first comic book film to ever be nominated for Best Picture, that is what goes down in the history books.

The alternative option is that Hollywood writes it off as just another Hollywood comic book summer blockbuster and the studios completely ignore the quality, care, writing, acting, cinematography, and storytelling that set this film apart from the rest.  The better “Dark Knight” does in terms of prestige and respect, the higher the bar is raised for the artform.  Wouldn’t you like rather see more comic book films like “Dark Knight” and less “Fantastic Four,” “Ghost Rider,” “Daredevil,” “Elektra,” “Spiderman 3,” and “Xmen 3.”

To answer that last sentence: um, yes?

Who knows if this'll make any impact at all—given the political nature of the Oscars, it's difficult to stay positive—but it's worth noting and it's definitely worth trying. If you believe that The Dark Knight deserves to be nominated for Best Picture, grab the video below and post it on your MySpace, Facebook, Livejournal, whathaveyous. The bigger the awareness is for this campaign, the more likely it'll reach out to AMPAS members. In a year that saw grassroots campaigns help elect a new President, maybe the same can be done to the Oscars.
