As we all know, Sex and the City debuted this weekend to millions of screaming adoring fans (a.k.a women) and boy did it smash the box office with a force. Put it this way, Dan Fellman stated that he hoped it would bring in at least $30 million on its opening weekend and was exuberant when it brought in over $55.7 million.

"Women power," Fellman said. "It was outstanding this weekend."

Movie analysts believed Indy would stay atop the charts due to the fact that it is not strictly a bias based movie type (basically not just aimed at women) the way Sex and the City is. Indy still grossed $46 million for its 2nd week bringing their 11 day domestic total to $216.9 million.

The reason for the surprise of this was no movie that is aimed mainly at just women has ever in history of cinema done this well on their opening day the way Sex and the City has. Sex and the City which is a rated R comedy has the best opening week debut for a R rated comedy topping American Pie 2 which held the record with $45.1 million.

Sex and the City also grabbed another honor as it is the number 5 largest grossing R rated film within its first week. Here is the top 5 list for you...

1. "The Matrix Reloaded" $91.8 million

2. "The Passion of the Christ" $83.8 million

3. "300" $70.9 million

4. "Hannibal" $58 million

5. "Sex and the City: The Movie" $55.7 million
