Still more Tropic Thunder outrage. The head of The Arc—the world's largest grassroots organization supporting people with intellectual and developmental abilities—is calling on Ben Stiller to have a sit down and meet with people with disabilities and their families, to help him understand why his movie offended them. They're also demanding that Stiller, Paramount and DreamWorks issue an official apology. So, funny little trivia I found out. The Arc was originally an acronym. When it started, the organization operated under the name The Association of Retarded Children. Since expanding its function beyond children, they stopped calling themselves that.
More than 780 chapters of The Arc across the United States will be at movie theaters throughout the weekend handing out flyers condemning the word "retard" and urging people to stay away from the movie. Arya's hot tip of the day: if you don't want to be bothered by flyers, go see the movie at malls. Most malls don't allow distribution of leaflets and protests inside the premises, as it would be considered tresspassing, so they can only campaign on the parking lot. The open letter follows:

"Satire is often strictly defined as a literary genre or form; although, in practice, it is also found in the graphic and performing arts. In satire, human or individual vices, follies, abuses, or shortcomings are held up to censure by means of ridicule, derision, burlesque, irony, or other methods, ideally with the intent to bring about improvement.[1] Although satire is usually meant to be funny, the purpose of satire is not primarily humor in itself so much as an attack on something of which the author strongly disapproves, using the weapon of wit. A very common, almost defining feature of satire is its strong vein of irony or sarcasm, but parody, burlesque, exaggeration, juxtaposition, comparison, analogy, and double entendre are all frequently used in satirical speech and writing. The essential point, however, is that "in satire, irony is militant"[2]. This "militant irony" (or sarcasm) often professes to approve the very things the satirist actually wishes to attack." |

So an organization that uses the word "retarded" in their original acronym, is offended by the use of the "r" word in the movie? Isn't that like the NAACP being offended by the word "colored"? And do they not realize that the satire is of how movies portray and exploit people with disabilities, not of people with disabilities themselves? This is another case of people shouting "offense" at something they don't bother to analyze and understand themselves. |

First off, ARC did and does stand for "a*sociation for Retarded CITIZENS," not children - but it's easier for a bigot to be condescending and insolent to children than to citizens, I guess. Your "funny little trivia" is neither funny nor trivial. Also, the "R" word fell out of favor when all service agencies discovered the gross inequities of thought and attitude that accompanied certain words like "Retard" as a noun, or "cripple" as a noun. These inequities translated to real-world discrimination whether this shallow, self-indulgent writer "Arya Ponto" thinks so or not. My only hope is that it is really true that this movie depicts the "r" word as being used by shallow, ignorant, self-absorbed, piggish people taht nobody would want to emulate, just as Blazing Saddles helped put an end to the "n" word by putting it into the mouths of ignorant racists whom nobody would wish to be |

Muel, I saw the movie today and can tell you the exact context. As you know, there are a lot of movies in Hollywood that center on a person with cognitive diabilities, and actors rush to get their hands on those roles. Ben Stiller's character did just that. His character is an idiot, and the "r" word is used by him to highlight how out of touch he was in trying to "understand" the type of person he was portraying in the fictional film his character starred in. There is nothing in "Tropic Thunder" that makes fun of people with cognitive diabilities. It pokes fun at ignorant actors who choose projects that portray people with cognitive diabilities. Just as a movie portraying racist would use the "n" word, this movie portraying actors ignorant of people with cognitive diabilities uses the "r" word. You actually see a clip of Stiller's character's fictional movie "Simple Jack." His character clearly had no idea what he was doing. Therefore, this type of arrogant actor was satrized. |

Although I have not seen the film, I heard an interview with Ben Stiller, and I agree with him that he is making fun of actors who attempt to play people with disabilities, not the people themselves. The person who really is his target is most likely Sean Penn, who played a mentally challenged father trying to keep custody of his daughter in the film "Sam I Am." his performance was roundly panned by critics as a cheap ploy for an Oscar. And why wasn't anyone offended by Tom Hanks in "Forest Gump?" |

The only thing The Arc organization is doing is bringing on more ticket sales for curious movie goers. People who might not have cared to watch the movie before will certainly want to see it now because of the hoopla. When are people going to lighten up and understand poking a little fun is not condemning an entire cla*s of people. We need to focus on improving ourselves as individuals and stop worrying about what other people think. I bet half these Arc members didn't think they were being offended until someone told them they were being offended. |

It always amazes me how the "Challenged" get first rights to everything. There is no challenge. Perhaps, we should make one of these "special" people president, just because of their disability. Yeah, we make fun of them, because we can. I have NEVER been given anything. I had to earn everything. Now, just because challenged need jobs, I am going to take it easy and collect unemployment and social security. Why, because it is diffult to work. |

The united states of the offended...it's not about misunderstanding satirical humor, but rather making an issue that brings their cause to the forefront. No such thing as bad publicity, right? Was this movie trying to make fun of 'intellectually challenged' folk? Nope, they were poking fun of actors. Maybe the problem here is that the non-challenged get it, the challenged havent got a clue (sad, but true), and the folks who care for the challenged are the ones getting offended not only for themselves being in their situation but projecting the presumed feelings of their challenged loved ones onto themselves. It's probably a really frustrating spot in which to find oneself. If I was a retarded person's caretaker, I would probably be frustrated and any inference to anything retarded would probably set me off, too. But that shouldn't mean that every producer or writer who refers to retarded people in the movies should sit down with a panel of retarded people and their caretakers so that they can be one with the retarded citizens. There will be other movies that say the words that offend someone, somewhere. There will be other groups that grand stand for their cause. Hopefully this will not persuade the studios to censor satires. |

When my brother was born with Downs Syndrome, in 1967, the doctors were quick to advise my parents to refrain from the surgery that would save his life: it would be better for everyone, they said. Think of 1967 in terms of other 'minorities': Martin Luther King was still alive, and marching through the southern United States; women had the right to vote, but not much else. In the past 40 years great strides have been made in these areas. There are still inequalities, there is still prejudice, but the tide has turned and there are now real opportunities for people like my brother Paul (who works part-time for Marriot, and lives independently)and many others. In this brave new world we can take pride that there are organizations and individuals who can and do publicly champion the rights of the 'retarded citizen', and take pride as well that artists like Ben Stiller feel free to lampoon those less sensitive to these particular issues. I think it is clear that Stiller never intended to malign the community that ARC serves, and that there are those in this community who, nevertheless, find the movie genuinely offensive. This is think, is a wonderful opportunity to have a public discussion of these issues. To censor Stiller, and others like him who use humor to satirize certain aspects of our community, would be a big mistake. To dismiss the concerns of those who have taken offense, would be equally offensive. I would urge Mr. Stiller and his co-stars to confront the issue directly, and turn this controversy into a positive. I would urge the leaders of ARC, and other organizations focused on this issue, to do the same. |

Aloha - thanks for the information. I teach numerous courses in independent living skills to adults with various developmental disabilities. I did get the impression that the film itself might actually stimulate dialogue that can prevent people from using the insolent "r" word - which is really no different than the "n" word. ARC was founded at a time when the word "retard" as a noun was not used with the incredible frequency with which it is used by people on the Internet who could have never been published back when educated editors actually had to select material for publication. I hope there will be dialogue between AC and the movie's makers - and that both will come forward to explain why the word is hurtful and to explain the use of teh word in tyhe film. I am, however, very bothered by the juvenile response I've seen by many on the Internet who THINK they're just rebelling against "Political Correctness" but are in fact just adolescents who've found an excuse to use another naughty word and giggle about it. "Get over it" or "it's just a word" are not legitimate responses. I'd welcome a chance to sit down at the table with the makers of this movie and engage them in dialogue - I suspect they are smart enough and open-minded enough to turn this into an opportunity to decrease the use of language that degrades and disempowers millions of people. I have to say that the attitude of the author of this piece is closer to the adolescents who use the word in a smarmy, "sticking their tongue-out-at-the-world" way, and would hope taht she'd take the opportunity to learn about the history of people with developmental disabilities in America. I recommend that everyone Google and read about "Willowbrook School Staten Island." |

Everyone should see it for themselves. They are not making fun of retarded people they are making fun of actors and the movie industry. I think that a bunch of people without obvious mental handycaps are trying use the "R" word and are exploiting those who are unaware. I am aware of my difference. Ben Stiller makes me laugh. While my handycap is mild in compairison to others I know or have gone to school with, people laugh at me, I laugh at them, and I laugh at myself. Sit in font of a mirror and hold out your hands. Touch you middle finger to your hand like making a fist. Now stick out your toung and try to lick you ears, first right then left while trying to say I love "Tropic Thunder!". This is a picture of someone acting severly retarded. It's funny when you do it. I think only actors can go "Full Retard". Me, I'm good with carpentry and electronics. And, many of my mentally challeneged friends are what most people call normal. They are barely good at anything. So back off. |

So what happens when no one uses the word retarded anymore, but make fun of the retarded solely by calling them metally challenged? What difference does it make? When are people gonna wake up and realize you can't stop people from being mean and unkind? Banning words that hurt your feelings won't make anyone stop making fun of your family member. There are all kinds of people in this world, true, and not all of them are nice so how bout you chin up and be a bigger person by putting down your signs and going on with your life instead of filling your emptiness with lost causes that don't change the fact that someone you care about it is slow. I also hate when caregivers tell their cared for how to think and feel. Like the time I saw a metally challanged person in line to vote with her caregiver, her caregiver was telling her who to vote for. Nice. |

Amen to Muel's comment. The argument put forth here about the original acronym containing the disfavored label 'retarded' is absurd. First, of all the concept of retardation implied that people with developmental disabilities were hopeless tragedies to be shoved into state institutions without any education appropriate to their ability level. It was also a term that came from eugenics in a context of ma*s forced sterilizations. The concept of 'retardation' is different that the concept of 'intellectual and 'developmental disabitility'. One concept (and term) is pejorative and the other is not. Secondly, the first terms people had for gays and lesbians was 'psychic hermaphrodites' and 'sexual inverts'. Should gays and lesbians be cool with those terms being used? Thirdly, any accusations of hypocrisy toward these protesters based on the original name of ARC is ridiculous since the people involved in this movement were not even involved in the founding of ARC IN NINETEEN FIFTY. Uninformed, smug critiques of those "crazy, politically correct people trying to ruin our fun" aren't substitute about learning about the history of how differences have been treated. Developmental and intellectual disabilities have biological origins. Ignorance is something people like Arya choose. |

There is an element of hyperbole in all comedy, including satire. But excellent satire is nuanced, and good satire is subtle. This is like a sledgehammer, neither amusing nor effective. The "truthful" elements in this film are painfully and luridly grotesque, and suggest a fair dose of self loathing for himself and his profession. The only retarded people involved in the film are in the audience. I actually think he is kind of cute and funny, better than this crap, and the reality of that world is this: money is the only thing they are really looking for. |

I think the reason that “retard” doesn’t get much traction with the political correctness folks is that it so often applies to all of us. There is an old saying that, "A little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing." I used that saying in a conversation with a friend of mine, and he had an amusing repartee. He said; "If a little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing, then who has so much as to not be dangerous?" I guess it could be argued that anyone with an I.Q. south of Albert Einstein’s is a “retard.” So, lighten up! |

Hi Corey, Or should I simply call you as$hole? Probably, because that's probably the reaction you incur on a daily basis. The flap isn't that the word "retarded" is, in and of itself, offensive like the N word, for example. Mental retardation thus far is an accepted term when speaking about mental retardation. It's the constant use of it in its short for, for example "retard", for the mentaly handicapped, or "retarded" as a term of abuse. Anybody who doesn't have it in their heart to have some sympathy for people with mental and devlopmental handicaps, well, I guess you just want to go through life as if nothing is as important as your own personal comfort. Well then, f*ck you, you pieces of shi&t and go right to hell where you belong. |

Its amazing (and quite ironic) how several people who HAVE seen the movie and tried explaining to those who are OFFENDED but HAVE NOT seen the movie seem to have their words fall of deaf (and dumb) ears. The fact is some people are in LOVE with the angry, self-righteous feeling of a*sociating themselves with a group of individuals who perceive themselves as persecuted. More and more we see freedom of speech being stripped away by special interest and minority groups who feel they have the right NOT to be offended. The movie uses the term in a context of highlighting the issues that the offended are actually upset about. yet all they know is they've seen a news blurb claiming a film made fun of developMENTALLY challenged folks and their minds snapped shut like a steel trap. They want the self-righteous outrage to stay. Sounds like a bunch of retards to me  |

(This is in response to the ARC, being a*sociation of Retarded Citizens AND not Children, which is what it was back in the early days of the being of this foundation. If you read this, it explains a lot. And how spin doctoring works in the nonprofit sector) Nonprofit's name change to show up on thrift stores By Jennifer Muhmel This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it Saturday, September 1, 2007 Visitors to the Ventura and Oxnard locations will see a noticeable change at the Retarded Children's Thrift Store and Retarded Citizens Thrift Store. Both stores will read The Arc Foundation Thrift Store by Sept. 10 if all goes according to schedule. Replacing signs is one of the final steps to complete two official name changes. The a*sociation for Retarded Citizens of Ventura County will be called The Arc of Ventura County, and its counterpart, the Foundation for Retarded Citizens of Ventura County, will be called The Arc Foundation of Ventura County. The Arc of Ventura County is a nonprofit organization that provides education, vocational and residential services for people with developmental disabilities, including case management, job placement, job coaching and independent-living training. "I've been encouraged to have this change for a while," said Fred Robinson, its CEO. He said the organization has used The Arc of Ventura County unofficially since the early '90s, after the a*sociation for Retarded Citizens of the United States became The Arc of the United States in 1992. Further motivation came in November, when the American a*sociation on Mental Retardation changed its name to the American a*sociation on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. As part of the official name change, anywhere "retarded" appears it will be removed, including signs, documents and literature. Several years ago the athletes of Special Olympics came to management and expressed how hurtful they regarded the word "retarded," said Leslie Aun, Special Olympics International spokeswoman. Although the word goes back a long time, today it is outdated and often misused, she said. The Arc of Ventura "is joining the recognition that it is a hurtful word, and in many ways, it's often used negatively," said Aun. The Arc of Ventura County, established in 1954, serves more than 800 people through its programs. The original name, a*sociation for Retarded Children of Ventura County, came about because of the founding father's children. In the '80s, the word "Children" was changed to "Citizens." The Foundation for Retarded Citizens of Ventura County, now The Arc Foundation of Ventura County, was established in 1989 as a nonprofit corporation to raise funds to support the nonprofit's programs and services. http://www.venturacountystar.com/news/2007/sep/01/nonprofits-name-change-to-show-up-on-thrift/ This is the link to the original copy. |

"retard" is just the slur in vogue. The majority of the people picketing this movie won't have even seen the movie or the context in which the word "retard" was used, so why even take their judgement serious? it just goes to show that boycotting and mud-slinging is easier than fundraising. |

Actually, Arc was at first the a*sociation for Retarded Children (ARC), then as these children became adults it was renamed the a*sociation for Retarded Citizens (ARC.) Now, however, it is simply the "Arc." The Arc's opposition to this term is based upon a desire for people to understand the effects of its use on those with developmental disabilities. Many of the individuals served by Arc are indeed able, on their own, to understand how offensive this term is, and have themselves led the movement to reject use of this word. It is, in many ways, little different from "the N word." As everyone knows, "retarded" is used specifically with the intent to insult and hurt, just as the word "n----r" is used. Both are rightly viewed as offensive by the persons to whom they are applied. |

I've seen it on numerous occasions where these people with disabilities were abused by (STAFF),some are detected and some undetected, and you know who you are! Now you want to turn around and make an actor(Ben Stiller),look bad because he's merely acting, that's right acting.Maybe, you might want to file an internal investigation on your own facilities, and prosecute them and make them look bad, oh know! That's right, then it would make you look bad,, God forbid. It's probably you that is abusing them. So sit back and think for a minute, Is this really worth a letter from Ben Stiller saying he's sorry. What does that staff member get when they are found guilty of abusing them, they get a*signed to another facility and it's swept under a rug. This all looks like a publicity stunt to me.See if you can get a letter from Sean Penn "SAM I AM", or Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise "RAIN MAN" ,PUT YOUR ARM BACK IN PLACE, IT'S OUT OF IT'S SOCKET, YOUR REALLY REACHING HERE!!! |
