Japan Remaking Hollywood? What a Concept! PDF Print E-mail

Hollywood is still hell-bent on remaking movies from foreign countries, that much won't change anytime soon (Grumble, grumble, stupid Spielberg, grumble), but that doesn't mean the river can't flow both ways, or whatever the expression is. Usually we've got Turkey and India to rely on for cracktastic remakes of Hollywood movies—occasionally Russia—with the results end up being cheap knock-offs.

A legitimate Japanese remake of Sideways is currently shooting in Napa Valley wine country, co-starring Oscar nominee Rinko Kikuchi (Babel), a collaboration by Fox Japan and Fuji TV.

Variety reports popular Japanese character actor Fumiyo Kohinata (Casshern, Dark Water) is playing the Paul Giamatti role, while Kikuchi is in the part originally played by Sandra Oh. Katsuhisa Namase is in Thomas Hayden Church's and Kyoka Suzuki is in Virginia Madsen's.

From what I understand, wine isn't really a hot commodity in Japan (why would you, when you've got sake?), but it's been gaining popularity as of late. This might be a byproduct of that surge.
