Current Heavy Metal mag owner and publisher Kevin Eastman (who is also the co-creator of the Ninja Turtles, FYI) is producing the third movie. The idea is, unlike the sequel Heavy Metal 2000, this one will be another anthology film like the original 1981 movie. The real draw is in getting top directors to direct each animated segment. Twitch pointed us out to this message board posting from the Heavy Metal forum by Kevin Eastman.
Out of those three, Zack Snyder is probably the one whose work reflects the Heavy Metal influence the most.
Interesting to hear that the project is also coming back to Paramount with Fincher still attached. A couple of months ago, Eastman had to move the project to Sony because of a tiff between Fincher and Paramount over The Curious Case of Benjamin Button's running time. They wanted it shorter and threatened to not greenlight any of Fincher's projects until he does what they say, and Fincher told them to piss off, hence the Sony move. I guess they kissed and made up now.
