Do you want to see something really scary?

depphatter An absolutely terrifying picture has surfaced on the web that supposedly features our first look at Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s new version of Alice in Wonderland. Most people don’t know that Lewis Carroll, the author of the original text, was an opium-addicted pedophile, but I feel like that might become common knowledge if the final film version is anything like we’re looking at here.

Then again, it could be fake. We don’t really know yet. It does have a certain photoshopped quality. But on the other hand, it feels like someone professionally screwed up did it. Honestly, it reminds me of Lost Girls, that infamous Alan Moore graphic novel that features Wendy from Peter Pan, Alice from Alice in Wonderland, and Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz going at it. It’s a good read if you’re willing to fork over the money (I’ve yet to see a library that stocks it).

What’s positive about this is that it’s the first piece of Tim Burton art in a long time that’s actually gotten a reaction out of me. There were some good bits in Big Fish and Sleepy Hollow, but I think that he’s gone downhill as a director since Ed Wood (which seriously deserved a Best Picture nomination in one of the best years for film in our recent memory). I don’t know, I feel like he doesn’t challenge himself anymore. Frankly, the same goes for Depp, who just had his crown as this country’s favorite lead yet character actor stolen by Heath Ledger this summer. Again, he deserved Oscar attention long before he got it, but he got it for his lesser work.

Then again, this provoked a response from me, so I hope it’s real. I’d love to see the two of them do something really raw again.

Tim Burton’s version of Alice in Wonderland will be a mixture of live action and CGI, and will also feature Mia Wasikowska as Alice, Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, Alan Rickman as the Caterpillar, Michael Sheen as the Cheshire Cat, and Crispin Glover as the Knave of Hearts. And Christopher Lee, doing we’re not sure what.

The film is scheduled to be released on March 5 of 2010.
