The Dark Knight is also not dropping out of the Best Picture race. Awards Daily has the short list of 11 films that the Best Picture contenders are down to. These films are:

Milk
Slumdog Millionaire
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Revolutionary Road
The Dark Knight
The Reader
Frost/Nixon
Doubt
Rachel Getting Married
Gran Torino
The Wrestler

It's not a fixed list, of course, and there could be changes in the month to come. It's safe to say, though, that The Dark Knight will stay on the list until the nominations are announced.

UPDATE: Here's another one.

That's a pretty solid list - though I must say I think Doubt will get knocked off - though more than one of it's stars will get an acting nom. I think the same goes for Rachel Getting Married - a good film - but it's more about its performances than as a whole film. Which is also true of the Wrestler - Mickey Rourke'll get a nom but not the film.

Gran Torino - no chance.

The top 5 look to be the most serious contenders (Maybe Frost/Nixon, but I've heard one of the two performances was too understated bringing the overall quality down)

Can Batman possibly defeat Jamal Malik?

See that's just it - while The Dark Knight might nudge it's way into the running (which can only happen if one of the more deserving four (Milk, Slumdog, Benjamin or Rev. Road) is knocked out for some ridiculous reason) in no way will it win. While I loved it also, it is nowhere near as good a film as Slumdog.

What's important is that it's even being CONSIDERED for a best pic. That says volumes about the future of comic book films. But no I think Jamal Malik and Benjamin Button will be the two serious contenders duking it out.

In terms of what the Academy will pick, I agree. But I'm pretty underwhelmed by the prestige pictures this year compared to 2007. I've seen half of those movies and so far I still like TDK the best.

I have too many issues with Slumdog to call it the best of the year. Milk is a Sean Penn vanity project. Rachel Getting Married is pretty meh outside of the performances. Frost/Nixon is the surprise treat since it's less contrived than the usual Ron Howard bulls**ttery.

Doubt and Revolutionary Road look kinda terrible. Benjamin Button has hope, but I'm wary about it. Gran Torino, lets not kid ourselves.

I'm pulling for either The Wrestler or The Reader.

While I've heard the Wrestler deserves it, I really feel like the Academy will give Rourke his Best Actor win and then feel like they can shrug it off for Best Pic contention.

The Reader is the one I know the least about. Actually, I'm now not even sure about Benjamin Button as I'm hearing from all the screening folk that it LOOKS more promising than it actually is.

You're 100% right - this year's slate pales in comparison to the heavy-hitters of last year.
