Prince Caspian Grants Thee Free Tuesday Commute PDF Print E-mail

I am constantly amazed by the various gimmicks movie studios come up with to promote their films. Sometimes they're creative, sometimes they're just plain odd. A free subway ride to promote a DVD release certainly falls into the latter category—but then again, who's going to say no to a free commute?

Walt Disney is going to pay for subway rides on the morning of Tuesday, December 2nd, to celebrate the release of Prince Caspian that on DVD and Blu-Ray that same day.

This is what the press release I received from them today says:

In This Tough Economy, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment Gives Morning Commuters a Free Subway Ride in Celebration of the DVD and Blu-ray™ Release of THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN

Feeling the wallet crunch after Black Friday? Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is doing their part to ease the burden by offering free subway rides to commuters at the Powell Street BART station in San Francisco. Much like in the film when the Pevensie kids are transported to the magical land of Narnia while waiting for the subway, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment hopes to spread a little of that same magic in the subway as commuters are transported to their destinations on the morning of December 2. The event celebrates the DVD and Blu-ray release of THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN.

A street team will be handing out a limited supply of $2.50 BART tickets. Er, this is probably going to sound ungrateful, but $2.50 is not enough to take you anywhere outside the city from the Powell station, so you can only use it to go to the 7 stops within San Francisco; but if you commute enough to have to do so on an early Tuesday morning, chances are you already have a monthly Muni pass, which gets you on the BART within the city for free anyway. I wouldn't say this is useless, since it's still $2.50 off your ride fare if you go to Oakland or the East Bay, but it's not quite the free commute they're promising. Come on, Disney. At least give enough for people to go to the airport for free.

It's not just San Francisco, as I've discovered. They're doing the same thing in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago and Miami.
