Is HBO desperate for another hit drama? Sure seems like it. After the end of The Sopranos, they haven't been able to secure another one like it, with many of the shows they debuted over the past year cancelled. So maybe it's not so surprising that they're returning to New Jersey for another crime show, and they're not messing around this time—they're bringing in Martin Scorsese.

The new project is called Boardwalk Empire, about Atlantic City's origins as a gambling mecca in the 1920s. Based on Nelson Johnson's meticulously researched Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City, the new show is being executive produced by Scorsese with his Departed co-star Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson, the duo that produced Entourage for HBO. Sopranos writer and producer Terence Winter wrote the pilot episode.

Scorsese is currently in negotiations to direct the pilot, but the number of films in his future slate (including the Theodore Roosevelt biopic with Leo) makes the scheduling tricky to pull off. This isn't the first time for HBO to tap a big-name director to direct their pilot. Walter Hill did Deadwood's and Oscar winner Alexander Payne is directing the pilot for new show Hung, but attaching a household name like Scorsese to a project could really suck in an audience. Can this actually replace Sopranos' position as HBO's top show?
