Bring your hankies and black ties... ABC has canceled three critically-acclaimed shows. Say goodbye to the prophetic visions of Eli Stone, the dead-raising of Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money's family saga. All three of them will not survive past this season.

While the killing of Pushing Daisies is downright criminal—not surprising, but criminal all the same—and very sad indeed (I’ve already begun building a shrine made out of pies), it is at least a blessing in disguise for Heroes fans. Remember?

The facts are these: Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller was a producer during the exciting first season of Heroes, and was the writer of the show’s best episode to date (“Company Man”). Could it be that his absence was the missing piece in Seasons 2 and 3? Earlier this month, Fuller told EW.com that if ABC doesn’t renew Pushing Daisies, he “will play with my friends at Heroes again,” though EW seemed to think that if he’s rehired, he’ll most likely play as a story consultant for the rest of Season 3, and later take on a showrunner position in Season 4. If that’s the case, maybe we have a cool Season 4 to look forward to.

As for the whimsical glory of Pushing Daisies, this season will unfortunately end in an unresolved cliffhanger and a lot of loose ends, but Fuller promises that fans would get their resolution eventually, even if it won’t be on television.

"We would love to continue telling this season's arcs in a comic book format, just to tie up all the loose strings -- and believe me, there are plenty," he continues. "That way we can tell a stand alone movie story that doesn't have all the baggage from the second season stories -- and those bags are packed!"

I still have the Pushing Daisies preview comic they published for Comic Con from a couple of years ago. It's just not really the same, since the off-kilter visual style and quirky comic timing of the performances get lost in written form. But what are you gonna do? Making a movie that you have to watch two seasons of a TV show to understand isn't exactly a smart thing to do.

Wherever it ends up being, it'll still be bittersweet. The world is just less brighter without Emerson Cod in it.
