Batman and Joker on "Entertainment Weekly" Cover PDF Print E-mail

Next week's issue of EW features a cover story on The Dark Knight—more specifically, the hype surrounding Heath Ledger's Joker performance and the tragedy that followed. The issue also brandishes a cool cover with the two nemesis in a stare-down.

That shot of Joker is gnarly. Something about the lighting really highlights the caked make-up he's wearing. And they say make up is not as gruesome as an acid bath.

The cover story is up at EW.com and this is what Nolan had to say about his decision to cast Ledger:

''The guy had serious nuts,'' Nolan says. ''What I needed was someone who wouldn't be afraid of the comparison with Jack Nicholson. And then I saw Heath's incredible performance in Brokeback Mountain. Such a lack of vanity. This was an actor who wasn't afraid to bury himself in his character — to a massive extent.''
