In the past, rapidly shifting release dates have never been a good sign, as they indicate a good deal of last-minute panic on the part of the studio, while they shift around scenes in the editing room and make grand decisions like adding voice-over tracks to the original release of Blade Runner. Gangs of New York underwent a number of different release dates, and though it did not bomb, it never materialized as the oscar gold that so many were counting on it to be. More recently, JJ Abrams’s Star Trek moved its release from Christmas Day of this year to May 8th of next, attracting the ire of many fans. It is nearly unheard of for a movie to have its release date moved forward, however, and the few times that it has happened have been due to the need to fill in a gap in a major studio’s schedule, as was the case when Warner Brothers pushed The Time Machine forward back in 2002 (although it’s entirely unknown what could have saved that movie). This is the first major vote of confidence in Valkyrie yet, however, on the part of Paramount. Either of its original prior release dates are typically suicide for any major release, and the dumping grounds for a film that the studio simply doesn’t know what to do with. This, coupled with the problems that the film-makers had during production (for whatever reason, the Germans were uncomfortable with all sorts of Nazi regalia being put up for the set at famous national landmarks) seemed to spell doom for this movie. This new move (reportedly in response to positive responses from preview audiences), puts it up against such Oscar hopefuls as Revolutionary Road and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and suggests that it’s a whole lot better than those of us looking forward to it were prepared for. Valkyrie stars Tom Cruise and is Bryan Singer’s first directorial effort since Superman Returns and now hits theaters December 26th. Nothing spells holiday cheer like Tom Cruise, Nazis...and eye patches.
