"Twilight" Replaces "Harry Potter" in November PDF Print E-mail

As if Harry Potter fans aren't livid enough having to wait an extra eight months to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, now they have to suffer the indignation of having the poor man's version coming out on their supposed day of celebration.

Actually, I have no idea if Harry Potter fans generally like Twilight or not. I just like to make up feuds, see if they come true. After all, Twilight did take over as the premiere fantasy series right now, ever since JK Rowling ended the Potter saga.

With the Half-Blood Prince movie now coming out on July 17th of next year instead of the advertised November 21st, a couple of movies quickly snapped up the juggernaut franchise's vacant old home like desperate vagrants. The first one is Disney's new 3D animated movie Bolt, and the other is Twilight. If you've never heard of Twilight, it's an adaptation of a ridiculously popular series of vampire-themed teen lit. I know next to nothing about it (and not that interested to find out—I really can't stand vampire romance novels), but what I do know is that Twilight's rabid fanbase apparently really, really, really can't stand it when their books are compared to Harry Potter. So cheers.

I asked myself what the appeal was, once, since every synopsis I've read make it sound like one of those cheap vampire erotica books, without the erotica. I ended up finding myself wondering why Plain White T's is popular. So I stopped.

As for Half-Blood Prince, we've been told that the teaser trailer is supposedly playing before Star Wars: Clone Wars, still bearing the "November" date. That's going to shatter some dreams there. At least the goth portion of HP fans have a cheaper alternative. Potterheads aren't the only ones unhappy, though. Entertainment Weekly is pissed off by the change because it totally screwed up their Fall Preview issue that just came out this week, which has Harry gracing the cover. EW and Warner Bros share the same parent company, and yet at no point did anyone thought to say "Stop the press!" Ditto with Empire, who also has Harry on their latest issue's cover. But that's what happens when the biggest movie of the season just suddenly disappears.

If you're still asking yourself why WB would shaft its potential audience like this when really the film doesn't need any more time to complete, the answer is Batman. Yes, young wizards, you can go ahead and blame The Dark Knight for ruining your fun. That film's gargantuan over-performance pretty much has WB monetarily content for the year 2008. They don't see a need for another hit this year since The Dark Knight took care of their revenue, so it was wiser for them to use Harry Potter to pad out their 2009 slate, which was previously looking a little bare in the summer tentpole department outside of Terminator: Salvation. Thanks a lot, Bruce.

I asked a Harry Potter super-fangirl to comment on this switcheroo; whether or not the early arrival of Twilight is enough to make up for 11 months of painful waiting. "I don't know what Twilight is," she responded. Well said.

How can you slam Twilight when you have never read them? Are you afraid to pick up the book because you will get swept up on it too?? Would that be too embarra*sing because of all the crap you are slinging here about it? I had no interest either. I wasnt into Vampire novels either. I picked it up after hearing so many personal accounts of people who picked it up and couldnt put it down. They read it in one sitting. So did I. I was curious and wow, did it blow me away. its so much more than a vampire novel. But, you dont have the guts to pick it up, because you are afraid you will like it too. OH The horror!!!

I am a HUGE HARRY POTTER FAN and I was one of the first to start a blog on HPANA about banning the movie ( the forum was deleted because I wrote all in caps) . Regardless, I am spreading the word as much as possible, along with everyone else. There are thousands who want to sit out the movie to screw WB. I was absolutely Thrilled that Twilight was moved into the slot that HP left open. That is exactly what the WB gets for making such a bad decision and screwing over the fans.

As a journalist, maybe you should do alittle more research before opening your mouth about something you dont know about.

I for one, will not attend in July. The movie will be ready by the original date. There is no reason to treat the fans like dirt. They won't make more money delaying the release date. I don't need to see it. I read the book. I recommend boycotting this film. Wait for the DVD, buy one, and have friends over to see it. Cut their profit to nothing.

Actually, a lot of Twilight Fans are also Harry Potter fans.... or the other way around. They don't like the comparison, well, because there is nothing to compare - apart from the fact that both is young adult and fantasy.

Summit made a very smart move. I believe that a lot of HP fans who normally might not have gone will now go see Twilight and additionally some people who normally wouldn't have at all. Summit loves their fans, while WB is screwing them.

I can see why you guys would be angry about this, but you really shouldn't boycott the movie. That would be screwing over the actors, the director, the writers, and the producers of this movie who have put a lot into it, and who didn't get a say either on when it would be released. So yeah we have reason to be angry at the executive department of WB but let's not punish ourselves and everyone else involved in the movie. We should watch it anyway.

Guys, I'm a Twilight fan and to tell you the truth, I"M GETTING SICK of Twilight fans bashing HP and HP bashing Twilight. JUST SHUT UP! Ok both of these books have NOTHING to be compared about! Twilight= Vampires HP=...well about everything. I've never actually read Harry Potter but I damn will defend it. I know that it's an amazing tale and I know that it really is enchanting. I would usually never read Twilight because I don't like following the crowd with their "Mean Girls" attitude. But I seriously like this book and I will NOT be embarra*sed to say so. If any HP fans go to the Twilight premiere and start bashing, I swear I will be angry. Stop trying to kill each others fandom! LET PEOPLE LEAVE. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. Only the immature people...

I. totally. agree. smilies/wink.gif

Sorry to be Twilight-biased but, mmmm.. Do most of you really wonder why WB moved HP to next year? And silly enough, :silly: do they realize the effect they've caused to the oh-so-rabid-HP fans out there? Tsktsk.

But anyway, that doesn't at all stop me from squealing and hyperventilating, does it? NOOOOO...

I really can't believe it. Can life get any better than this? B)

Love the series, obsessing over it. Really grateful to have known about this epidemical craze slash phenomenal ma*s hysteria.

So what do I say to Harry Potter? I don't know, they've got brooms! :s

That's really sad. You shouldn't boycott the movie just because its release is gonna be eight months delayed.

HP vs Twilight is really sad too.

People should really stop comparing the two (*ehem* well, n/a to me... )

Anyway... all twilighters gloat and hp fans ... well uhm, be optimistic :pinch:

On the side note, I'm trying my best to euphemize and not rant here. So bear with me.
