"Tropic Thunder" Blasts "The Dark Knight" to Second Place PDF Print E-mail

Despite—or perhaps thanks to—the controversy surrounding the film, Tropic Thunder is the #1 movie at the box office this weekend, finally ending The Dark Knight's month-long reign at the top.

Tropic Thunder scored $26 million this weekend, while The Dark Knight is $10 mil behind with its $16.8 million take. Since it opened Wednesday, Tropic Thunder has earned a total of $37 million. It falls in line with the pattern of other successful R-rated comedies, which tend to open modestly but go on to gross over $100 million thanks to word-of-mouth. Meanwhile, The Dark Knight's total is now $471.5 million, officially replacing the original Star Wars' $461 million as the #2 highest grossing movie of all time.

Asked whether or not he's disappointed by being knocked off the box office throne by a movie in the middle of a boycott, Batman had this to say:
