Warner Brothers Watching "Watchmen" Go Bye Bye? PDF Print E-mail

watchmen_smiley.gifI think this ranks as a REALLY, TRULY devilish act. Variety reports that after letting Warner Brothers film and advertise the upcoming film release of Allen Moore's Watchmen, Fox has taken legal action to have the film altogether disbanded. That's right - the Watchmen film, as we know it may never see the light of day.

Thanks to a 1994 claim to rights for Allen Moore's Watchmen, Fox was able to take Warner Brothers to court for developing a property they didn't entirely own the rights to. Today, a judge denied Warner Brothers plea to have the case dismissed. While this is obviously not the news Warner Brothers wanted - the subsequent news that came with it must be breaking their hearts (and wallets). Deciding against becoming participants in the eventual profits of the film, Fox has decided to try and bury the film altogether.

I'm not exactly hugely anticipating the Watchmen, but shit, I was definitely gonna see it in the theaters. After all, a comic book movie is a comic book movie is automatic fun (yes, even if it sucks as hard as Daredevil). There's still that popcorn munching aspect that comes with.

But not anymore. Why cancel the movie altogether? Considering Warner Brothers fronted all the cash for production and advertisement, taking a share of the profits is an automatic win. "When you have copyright infringement, there are some damages you never recover," said a source close to the litigation. Personally, I think that's a load of shit. This smells like nothing more than trying to sink the metaphorical battleship of Warner Brother's summer lineup. They couldn't take down the Batman, so let's take out his lesser known flunkies instead.

Shame on you Fox.
