The role was famously played by Bruce Lee in the 60's TV show, before his movies took him to superstardom. Chow is a big admirer of Bruce Lee and had paid homage to the icon in his movies, most notably in Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle. I can't think of any other Chinese actor that would fit the role better, especially considering that the Pineapple Express writing duo's take would include more than a little bit of comedy on top of the superhero action.
The film is now in fast track and is set to hit theaters in June of 2010.

Here's one long-standing rumor that I'm glad to see come true. The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Stephen Chow has finally signed on to not only play Kato in Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's Green Hornet movie, but also direct the damn movie. Chow was a fan-favorite choice that Seth Rogen himself said to be his dream pick when he first got the job over a year ago.
