I know that I'm asking a question that might be considered sacrilegious by certain groups here, but I'm going to ask anyway. Ladies, before you infiltrate my favorite Starbucks spot and put nitric acid in my Caramel Frappucino, hear me out first. It's healthy to ask hypothetical questions once in a while. Seriously: what if Twilight end up sucking the big one? I know it's going to be a success. That's probably the one certainty in an uncertain economy. The soundtrack is already on Amazon's Top 5 Best-Selling albums based on pre-sales alone (it's not out until Nov 4th). The trailer had 3.5 million views online in less than 48 hours after its debut. Oh, and it has the fastest selling merchandise since Harry Potter. So it's not really a surprise to hear its producers fast-tracking the next installment. The question is, is it wise? True, the dangers of overhyping is not exclusive to this film alone. I doubt any movie in the next few years could surpass the feverish hype surrounding The Dark Knight in the months before its release. I myself was guilty of being almost 100% sure that the movie wouldn't be bad even before I saw it. The difference is, Dark Knight had a lot of crutches, from a respectable director/writer team to a bevy of great actors. Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke doesn't exactly have as solid of a track record, and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg's only other feature film credit is the dancing movie Step Up. Then there's the teeny bopper cast. Frankly, in the case of Twilight, the anticipation solely rests on the source material alone, which is never a good platform to put confidence in when it comes to movie adaptations. What happens if it really, really sucks? Would any of its fans care? Or do they love the story so much that they zealously believe it cannot possibly be disappointing? If it does suck terribly, are they going to admit it, or are they going to be apologetic just because it's Twilight? Fandom is a tricky thing. You want to show the love, but you have to understand that a bad movie is a bad movie, regardless of how much you love the characters in it.

This is what happened with The Golden Compa*s, weeks before the film's release they announced a sequel was being prepped for the fast track. The movie flopped. The sequel shall never be. Be warned Twilight. |

Maybe everyone should just realize this is going to blow and go see a real movie like "Let The Right One In". Seriously, Let The Right One In is looking at a 97% on RT and twilight will definitely fall below 50%, make the right choice |

i'm a fairly big twilight fan (not quite obssessive, but still.)... I kind of agree, though. All this hype makes for a bigger disappointment if the movie isn't good. I hope it will be though. Let's just wait for the film to come out, though! =D actually, come to think about it, added anticipation and hype ruins almost EVERY film. everyone told me the dark knight was so great that i was completely expecting to be blown over. and i wasn't really. i mean, it was good, but not the BEST movie ever. probably would have been if everyone had stopped talking about it. |

The book was (and I'm putting it mildly here) a disaster. It makes real writers want to mourn for the future of literature. Not even Hollywood special effects can change the fact that it was completely shallow. Oh, but then, people won't be looking at the plot. They'd be looking at Pattinson and whoever had a strong-enough stomach to play Bella. Not that there is a "plot" to speak of, though. There wasn't. |

I'm a big fan of the books. I'm certainly not obsessive but I do love the books. I'm not part of the demographic it's geared towards. I read real literature and enjoy it. I love Jane Austen and Brave New World is one of my favorite books. With that said, Twilight was engaging to me because of its simplicity. I personally do not think it's great writing, but I still fell in love with it and its characters. Now, I finished watching the movie a few hours ago and honestly cannot tell you how I feel after having seen it besides maybe numb. Because I've read and reread the books I was able to fill in the gaps without a second thought. But that's not a good thing because no movie should be enjoyable only if you've read the books. I've never read the Harry Potter books and I really enjoy the movies and feel like I've gotten the basic understanding of what the books are about. I just think this movie had so much potential and I am not ashamed to say that maybe Twilight did suck....bad. However, I did not get my hopes up for this movie after knowing who would be directing/writing and what company was backing it. I'd never even heard of Summit and after researching it I was extremely disappointed from the get go. In someone else's hands this movie could have been great and extremely successful (sure it will do well opening weekend but I doubt its success will be lasting). As for the actors, they did the best they could have given the direction of the movie and it's script. Still I will be seeing it again this time to actually watch the movie and try to see it as a non-reader. We'll see. It still looks dim. |
