If you want to know how awesome Heavy Metal's cult following is, look no further than the big name directors who are jumping to work on the new film.

Current Heavy Metal mag owner and publisher Kevin Eastman (who is also the co-creator of the Ninja Turtles, FYI) is producing the third movie. The idea is, unlike the sequel Heavy Metal 2000, this one will be another anthology film like the original 1981 movie. The real draw is in getting top directors to direct each animated segment.

Hey Guys,
Well here we are again--and I'm trying to keep you up on the latest, without boring you with the 24/7 issues that are delt with on this project. Regardless--things proceed--and the good news I have to share is Zack Snyder has said yes to directing one of the segments--so he's be joining Fincher, and Gore Verbinski as part of the official line up--there's more on the director front--but I'll hold off to share more with you shortly.
Also looks like it might end 8up back at Paramount--gotta love Hollywood.

Out of those three, Zack Snyder is probably the one whose work reflects the Heavy Metal influence the most.

Eastman himself plans to direct a segment. Guillermo del Toro expressed interest in directing one, although he probably won't be able to, since he'll be busy on The Hobbit. Can't wait to see who else is Eastman tapping into. May we suggest Trey Parker?

Interesting to hear that the project is also coming back to Paramount with Fincher still attached. A couple of months ago, Eastman had to move the project to Sony because of a tiff between Fincher and Paramount over The Curious Case of Benjamin Button's running time. They wanted it shorter and threatened to not greenlight any of Fincher's projects until he does what they say, and Fincher told them to piss off, hence the Sony move. I guess they kissed and made up now.
