I don't think I've ever seen a movie trailer quite as baffling as the one for After Last Season, and I've seen the trailer for C Me Dance. No, this trailer is beyond just weird. It even looks legitimately poor, like it's made by people who have never learned anything about filmmaking. Certainly not composition. But what is this? Is it someone's idea of an internet prank? Is it a sweding project? A YouTube parody of mumblecore? No, my friends, this is a trailer for an actual movie coming out in June. To select theaters, of course.
It's never nice to make fun of indie projects, let alone ones that took genuine hard work (10 years and $5 million, believe it or not), but some tough love is in order. What, exactly, does this trailer tell us? Why did they pick random scenes from the movie to represent it? "They've got printers in the basement you can use." WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? It's Donnie Darko all over again! So many questions left unanswered, so many interests mildly piqued. What is the film about? Why does it look like it was shot entirely in a living room? What's with the cardboard sets? Why does it cost millions to commission CGI effects that look like it was made on a Commodore64? This trailer apparently baffled the folks at Apple.com too, because they've listed the film as Comedy on their trailers page. According to an interview with the film's director, Mark Region, this is a mistake. He prefers to describe it more as a dark Hitchcockian thriller.
He lies. There is nothing about this project that approaches anything resembling "regular." To find out more, I went to the official website. It didn't help. The synopsis is as equally wrapped in enigma as its elusive trailer:
Despite the lack of a coherent info, the visit to AfterLastSeason.com was not entirely a waste. It was the opposite, for the discovery of the Video page can surely be described as a reward. Watch the following clip from the film.
For the lucky few of you, keep an eye out for After Last Season June 5th at your local theaters. |
