Apparently, last week people got all hot and bothered by a new Darth Vader toaster on sale at StarWars.com. Ooo, it burns an image of Vader on the toasts! While the idea of a shiny black Star Wars toaster is pretty neat, please, let us not ignore the fact that it's a blatant attempt to mimic the Battlestar Galactica Cylon toaster that came out last year, which burned the image of a Cylon Centurion on the toast. Joke's on them, though, because now up for sale is a newer limited edition model of the Cylon toaster, much cooler in every way, made exclusively for this year's Comic-Con. The toaster has a Centurion's face on its side complete with a red LED light that moves side-to-side, just like a Centurion's eye. It also has two different plates on the slots now: one burning the Cylon image, the other burning the phrase "FRAK OFF." I like to think that the hostility is directed at the Darth Vader toaster. It makes the toast extra crunchy. As any BSG fan would know, a Cylon toaster is a great fanboy in-joke item, since "toaster" is a, uh, speciesist epithet the humans use to refer to Cylons on the show. With the Darth Vader toaster, it just looks like the beginning of a sci-fi breakfast trend. What's next, Dune sandworm waffle maker? Oddly enough, this new Cylon toaster is supposedly produced for the San Diego Comic-Con and only 2000 units are available, yet you won't be able to buy it at Comic-Con (though it will make appearances at the Con as a display). If you want one, you have to purchase it at the NBC-Universal online store and they'll ship it to you in September. Be aware, though, that this kind of BSG goodness will set you back $90. If you do choose to get it, I hope you'd still have money left to buy the Complete Series Blu-ray. |
