The teaser trailer for James Cameron’s Avatar rightly stole everyone else’s thunder yesterday, after much hype and anticipation; but Avatar was not the only film to dish out a trailer today attached to Inglourious Basterds. It’s certainly not the only big news in film this week. In this new feature, let’s take a look at the good, the bad, and the WTF.
THE GOOD • Bruce Willis talked to MTV about climbing aboard Sylvester Stallone's manly epic The Expendables, joining the likes of Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Steve Austin and Arnold Schwarzenegger, among other testicle draggers. • We finally got a trailer for the David Lynch / Werner Herzog collaboration My Son My Son, What Have Ye Done. I still can't believe they're really going with that title, but it's great. The trailer looks... pretty much like Werner Herzog directing a David Lynch movie. Shannon and Dafoe should be great to watch, and I got a kick out of the totally non sequitur bit in the trailer where an ostrich steals Udo Kier's sunglasses.
• In what is angering a lot of purists but actually making me giddy with anticipation, Variety reports that Robert Zemeckis is planning on writing and directing a remake of the Beatles animated movie Yellow Submarine. Disney has been quietly negotiating the rights to the songs, which would allow Zemeckis to construct a brand new film in CG-animated 3D. Am I wrong in thinking that this is a fantastic idea? Imagine that beautiful Rock Band opening cinematic... in 3D! Maybe it can wash away the sour taste that was Across the Universe. • I've been wanting to see the British true crime psycho-biopic Bronson ever since I heard about it, partly because of the notorious subject (Charles Bronson, dubbed the most violent prisoner in the UK) and partly because I've been hearing sensational stuff about Tom Hardy's performance as Bronson. The film is having a very small run in the US in October beginning in New York, courtesy of Magnolia Pictures, and here we have its domestic trailer.
THE BAD • Universal’s remake of the classic monster film The Wolfman has been through a lot of challenges in its production. A script by Se7en writer Andrew Kevin Walker went through many rewrites, director Mark Romanek was replaced with Joe Johnston, and the release date was delayed several times. I suppose it’s no surprise that this trailer is more Van Helsing than Bram Stoker’s Dracula, despite the caliber of the actors involved.
• Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island is being pushed back to a February 2010 release, possibly in the hope of chasing an Oscar nod. Deadline Hollywood has the details. • Now this is just sad. After getting booted off the Twilight franchise, director Catherine Hardwicke is now set to direct The Girl With the Red Riding Hood, a goth retelling of the famous fairy tale that places a teenage love triangle in the middle of a werewolf movie. It's not clear when she'll get to it, though, since she has several other movies in development, including a remake of 21 Jump Street. • Another not-so-good trailer making its way to the net is Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story, which is really selling itself solely on the basis of it being a Michael Moore movie. Unlike the amusing teaser video of Moore begging change for CEOs, this trailer really offers nothing. But hey, it's a new Michael Moore movie. It would have just been preaching to the choir.
THE WTF • Friday saw the debut of the first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s new film Inception with Basterds. On the same day, WB launched the official site for the film; not with the trailer on display, but with a spinning top that follows your mouse movements. • Twilight dildo. Need I say more? Okay. This twildo isn’t an official Twilight merchandise (that would fly past WTF to shoot-me-now), but it’s about as close as you can get. Aside from being called The Vamp and having the pale coloring of Edward Cullen, this dildo also sparkles. If that’s not wink-wink enough for you, the product page sprinkles words like “twilight,” “new moon,” “eclipse” and “breaking dawn.” The subtlety penetrates the soul. • Speaking of Twilight, author Stephanie Meyer and her publisher got hit by a hilarious lawsuit from some chick who claims that Meyer stole material from her obscure novel for Breaking Dawn. Her claim, apparently, is based on the fact that both novels contain striking similarities such as a wedding and the subsequent sex on a beach. In other news, James Cameron's Avatar is totally a rip-off of these doodles I drew and posted on MySpace years ago, proven by the fact that his alien creatures, like mine, are also two-legged. • If you're sick of how Michael Cera keeps playing the same character over and over, fear not. In this Youth in Revolt trailer, we do actually see Cera play a somewhat different character, on top of playing two roles. Except... I'm not sure if it's working?
• THR reports that the Wayans Brothers are working on a sequel to White Chicks, and Sony is actually greenlighting it. Go ahead, struggle. Scream. Say no. Reach for the pepper spray. It's not going to stop the Wayans any. |
