Was "Phantom Menace" Bad Enough to Deter Writing Gig? PDF Print E-mail

Anyone who's seen the second season of Spaced (and now that it's finally on R1 DVD, there's no excuse not to) knows Simon Pegg's feeling on the Star Wars prequels. Like many, he was disappointed to the point of hatred; but unlike other geeks, he had a TV show to vent his frustration on. The crappiness of Phantom Menace became a running joke on the show, most memorably when Pegg's character is fired from his comic book store for berating a little kid wanting to buy a Jar Jar doll. So with his dislike clearly well-known, how is Pegg now hoping to get on board the Star Wars train again?

Unlike the lovable Tim Bisley, the real Simon Pegg had time to heal. It's been 9 years since The Phantom Menace and 3 since the new trilogy ended. The new live-action Star Wars TV series is currently in production and Pegg wants to write an episode—if he can.

"I might try to wheedle my way back into the affections of Lucasfilm and write an episode of the new live action Star Wars TV series."

Don't worry, Simon. I think by now Lucas is used to people hating on his prequels. Pegg might have to wait a little, though, since Lucas is planning on writing the first season of the show himself.

The TV series might debut as late as 2010, with Lucas stating that it'd be a grittier and more adult-oriented science-fiction like Battlestar Galactica that takes place during the "Dark Age" Obi-Wan talks about in the first movie—the rise of the Empire. If that's the case, would Pegg still be a good fit to write it? You'd think he'd be more suited to write Han Solo/Leia stuff.
