2 Big Name Shows Losing Big Names

The late night slot will be taking some big hits here soon. Nicolette Sheridan has been confirmed to be leaving Desperate Housewives and T.R. Knight as well as co-star Katherine Heigl are rumored to be leaving from Grey's Anatomy. This is something that is huge. DH has been trying new things and trying new storylines, but pushing the lives of the woman 5 years of Wisteria Lane has only created awkward tensions and is now guaranteed the loss of residential cougar Nicolette Sheridan. With Grey's Anatomy they will be possibly losing a newly thrown together couple (from a huge bungled crazy storyline that makes very little sense to GA watchers) which are also 2 of the major characters of the show. What you need to ask is, are you surprised?

Very few shows can hold onto their original cast for long periods of time. E.R. which was widely considered the best doctor styled drama to this day, lost a large group of cast during its long run in the 90s and early 2000s including George Clooney and Noah Wyle. The show today isn't what it used to be and DH as well as GA are going to feel that rough cut back here soon.

Start off with Desperate Housewives where we know for sure that Sheridan is leaving. Sheridan's character Edie who is now married to Dave (Neal McDonough) is apparently going to get off'd with a scenario involving Dave. Dave apparently tries to kill her and Edie barely escapes only to get into a wreck and die involving her car and some electrical wires or something. Sounds loose and hastily made. Since DH is losing super cougar it makes you wonder who will pick up the slack of Sheridan's dirty character. Longoria is now a flunky housewife with 2 chubby kids so scratch her off. Marc Cherry (DH creator/writer) doesn't apparently like Teri Hatcher very much (surprise, surprise) and Hatcher's character is the most hated character on DH as it is, so count her out. When you look at it, it seems like they will have to take a new angle to the series and work without Sheridan's saucy character yet again, but permanently this time.

Now onto Grey's Anatomy. The show has been under fire recently for its over the top storylines as well as awkward character moments. Making George's (Knight) ex wife Callie (Torres) a temporary lesbian after the failed marriage (that apparently happened to quickly says many GA fans) was just too random. It ending as quickly as it started too. Then you have Izzy (Heigl) and George (Knight) who started sleeping together while George was married which made many GA viewers simply go, "What the F**K George?." I myself have watched GA (Cause of my ex, so don't try to take my Man Cards or take me to Man Court) and I have to say that it was a well constructed show with good personalities to work with. The stories now though from what I have heard and seen some of, are just honestly ridiculous. It is apparently getting bad enough that T.R. Knight and Katherine Heigl are threatening to jump ship.

The end result of all this is that if Desperate Housewifes cannot come up with a character to replace Sheridan it will see a decline in its audience. Not enough to get it cancelled, but enough to see a difference. Honestly, DH will be ok without Sheridan as it is a character that is considered "expendable."

On the other hand, Grey's could be facing the end of the line if both Knight and Heigl leave. Losing a replaceable character is easy to recover from, but losing 2 major characters is something that is nearly impossible to recover from. It has been done before, but with the storylines being used and with viewers outraged at what is going on we will see. You know it is getting a bit sketchy when they do a mix of Private Practice and Grey's Anatomy to bring back Addison (Walsh) in an attempt to boost ratings.

Remember, Housewifes has confirmed the loss of Sheridan so that is fact, Grey's is not only denying these allegations, but is saying that Heigl and Knight are happy with the show. When all is said and done Grey's would be hurt much more by their losses compared to what Desperate would be losing. Either way we will see a mix up here. Remember Isiah Washington got fired for comments made about T.R. Knight and was promptly taken off the show which left a huge void with Sandra Oh's character. Heigl has proven to be a firecracker. After her movie Knocked Up came out she condemned it saying it was a negative light to women even though it was very successful so Grey's fans, you're not safe.
