Canadian indie-rockers Plants and Animals\' debut LP, Parc Avenue, leaves a lot to be said. Unfortunately, what\'s to be said is anything but flattering.
Of Parc Avenue\'s eleven tracks of carefree jamming, there are only three I can truly admit that I enjoyed: “Bye Bye Bye,” “Good Friend,” and “Mercy.” They are great tracks that highlight Plants and Animals ability to compose entertaining and enjoyable music. The lyrics and musical flow make these amazing tracks definitely worth putting on your iPod, Zune or MP3 player for later use.
On the downside, the rest of Parc Avenue is something you can go without. It won’t impress or wow you: it is just there. On tracks like "New Kind of Love," Plants and Animals\' jam session goes on longer than it should. Overdoing isn\'t the right word, but it\'s the first word that comes to mind. I can see the musical talent that Plants and Animals posses, but with so many other established indie-rock bands playing in a crowded genre, it\'s going to be challenging for Plants and Animals to yell "Hey, look at us!" loud enough for anyone to notice.
All in all, I recommend Parc Avenue only if you’re a fan of Plants and Animals or an indie-rock fanatic. This album will not sway anyone into the indie-rock genre. “Bye Bye Bye”, “Good Friend”, and “Mercy” may perk an ear or two, but the tracks are nothing more than a quick iTunes purchase.
Parc Avenue is definitely not the knockout debut Plants and Animals were looking for, but it is something that the fans will enjoy and want in their collection.
