Charlie Kaufman and Jon Brion Reunite for 'Synecdoche, New York'

By Arya Ponto

Jon Brion is once again scoring a Charlie Kaufman movie. Perhaps impressed with his work on Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (which Kaufman wrote), Kaufman has recruited Brion to score his directorial debut Synecdoche, New York.

The info came from the official press kit from the Cannes film festival, where Brion is listed for the music credit.

Synecdoche, New York certainly looks to have the same dream feel of Eternal Sunshine. In the film, Phillip Seymour Hoffman plays a theater director who builds a replica of New York City in a giant warehouse for his ambitious play.

Toadies Reunite, Announce New Album

By Tyler Barlass

You may remember the Toadies by their hit single "Possum Kingdom" that came out back in the mid-'90s. Riding the wave of the popular "post grunge" movement, the Texas based quartet toured extensively throughout the '90s and into the turn of the century. In 2001 after the departure of bassist Lisa Umbarger the Toadies officially disbanded.

Luckily, for the band's adoring fans, the Toadies have played a number of reunion shows over the past couple of years and have recently confirmed that the band has officially reunited. According to the Toadies Myspace page, the band has announced that they will also be releasing a new album this summer; their first since 2001 and only their third full length album ever. The album will be titled No Deliverance and is set for an August 19th release date.

You can catch the band on tour this summer or check them out on the 'Myspace Stage' of this year's Lollapalooza. Below are the currently announced dates of their 2008 summer tour.

June 20: Sunset Station/ San Antonio, TX
June 21: Ridglea Theater/ Fort Worth, TX (sold out)
June 24: Masquerade/ Atlanta, GA
June 25: Black Cat/ Washington DC
June 26: Bowery Ballroom/ New York, NY (sold out)
June 27: Middle East Underground/ Cambridge, MA

Sinatra Stamp

On May 13th a definitive collection of Sinatra's hits on his Reprise label was released under the name Nothing But the Best. If you pick up the first pressing of the new album you'll receive one of the first pressings of the Sinatra stamp with your purchase.

Meshuggah "Bleed" Music Video Now Online

By Jason Perry

I'll be honest, I can't really tell what's going on in Meshuggah's new video "Bleed", but it definitely delivers on violent imagery. Maybe I need more drugs.

The video was directed, written and edited by Ian McFarland and Mike Pecci.

"Bleed" is off Meshuggah's new album obZen, which landed the Swedish metallers at #59 on the Billboard Top 200 back in March.

The Briggs to Release 'Come All You Madmen'

By Jason Perry

LA's The Briggs are set to release their new effort, entitled Come All You Madmen, on June 17.

Founded by singing guitarists brothers Jason and Joey LaRocca, The Briggs are rounded out by Chris Arredondo on drums and Ryan Roberts on bass. The Brigg's fourth release features that tight, in-your-face sound the band has honed to perfection with six solid years of touring under their belts with the likes of Bad Religion, Flogging Molly, Anti-Flag, The Living End, and Dropkick Murphys.

The dozen blistering tracks on Come All You Madmen were penned on acoustic guitar while out on the road with Dropkick Murphys. Teaming up with The Mighty Mighty Bosstones bassist Joe Gittleman as producer, the band was determined to keep their ferocious live sound intact.

Creating a more aggressive, yet melodic and folky record, Come All You Madmen finds The Briggs at their very best.

"We figured there was no point in f**king around in making a boring, safe record," Jason LaRocca declares, "so we turned it up a notch, pushed our own limits out of the comfort zone. We went more extreme."

Featuring guest appearances from punk rock icons Brian Baker (Bad Religion, Minor Threat), Ken Casey (Dropkick Murphys) and Dicky Barrett (The Mighty Mighty Bosstones), Come All You Madmen erupts with explosive, anthem-like working class street punk. From the soaring guitars on the fist-pumping "Charge Into The Sun" to the hometown shout out on "LA" and the marching beats of the Irish inspired sing-along "Mad Men" and the acoustic folk offering of "Oblivion," The Briggs continue to establish themselves as one of punk's most respectable and memorable acts.

Catch The Briggs this summer as they tour the U.S. on the Van's Warped Tour. The band was already recently added to the lineup for both the Reading and Leeds Festivals in the UK this August.

*UPDATE* Scott Weiland Serves 14 Minutes of Jail Time

By Jason Perry

People.com is reporting that former Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland checked into a Van Nuys, Calif., jail on Monday (May 12) to serve eight days for a second DUI conviction.

Weiland's first DUI conviction occurred on April 28, where the controversial singer was sentenced to 192 hours in jail for a November 2007 DUI. In addition, Weiland received four years' probation and forced into an 18-month alcohol program.

Guess he fell asleep during class.

Weiland was billed to join Stone Temple Pilots at Rock on the Range on May 17 in Columbus, Ohio. However, quick math reveals that if Weiland's sentence began today, he's going to be behind bars while STP takes the stage.

No official announcement has been made regarding Weiland's appearance at Rock on the Range.

Update (5.13.08): Looks like no official announcement will be needed. According to TMZ, Weiland was released from jail last night at 6:54 p.m.: a whole 14 minutes after he was officially booked.

Blabbermouth reports that Weiland turned himself in at 8:55 a.m. yesterday, was booked just after noon, and then checked into prison at 6:41 p.m.

Is that a jail time record?

Moros Eros Officially Break Up

By Tyler Barlass

Experimental rockers Moros Eros have recently announced via their Myspace page that they will no longer be a band. The group, which hails from Marietta, Georgia, originally went by the name Vitro before signing with Victory Records in 2006. They released two full length albums while with Victory.

The band states that "We didn't really feel up to the task of playing this kind of music anymore."

We may not have heard the last of these inventive southerners though, apparently the members will branch out into other genres and continue to write music. According to Moros Eros themselves, "We have already started moving on to other things, musically and personally."

New Release Date for Mötley Crüe's 'Saints of Los Angeles'

By Jason Perry

Inspired by the energy and experience of their performance with their Crüe Fest cohorts Buckcherry, Papa Roach, Sixx:A.M. and Trapt at the press conference to announce their upcoming summer tour, Mötley Crüe extended the production for their upcoming CD, returning to the studio this week to record one more track for their first studio album in over a decade, Saints of Los Angeles.

The album, which has a new release date of June 24th, follows the story of the band's NY Times best-selling memoir The Dirt, a no-holds-barred tell-all that features every gritty detail of the group's exploits as one of the world's biggest rock bands.

Says Sixx,

"Before our performance at the press conference, we were firing on all cylinders at sound check just jamming out, and that's when the new idea came. We quickly laid it down and went to the studio to record it, and liked it so much we pushed back the release one week so that we could get it onto the album – it now has 13 tracks. It's the ultimate song to end the record with and begin the new chapter of our career."

Produced by Live Nation, Crüe Fest is a touring rock festival embracing the lifestyle of rock. With the lineup including Mötley Crüe, Buckcherry, Papa Roach, Sixx:A.M. and Trapt, "Crüe Fest '08" will undoubtedly be the summer's loudest show on earth. The trek kicks off July 1st in West Palm Beach, Florida and works its way across North America for over 40 dates throughout July and August. Tickets, band profiles and exclusive content from all of the Crüe Fest bands will consistently be uploaded at Rockvine.

Oasis drummer Zak Starkey is fed up with the volatile British rock group.

The Sun reports that Starkey is unlikely to perform with the band again after an ugly falling out with singer/guitarist Noel Gallagher.

Starkey was scheduled to join the band's August US tour, but those plans have been nixed. Starkey, however, will still appear on Oasis' recently completed new album.

A source close to the band told The Sun:

"There have been arguments with Noel Gallagher and general disagreements."

No official statement has been released by Oasis in regards to Starkey's departure and replacement.

REVIEW: "Lust Lust Lust" by The Raveonettes

By Tyler Barlass

One of the most unique things about The Raveonettes sound is their vocals. The group, which consists solely of Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo, sing simultaneously atop retro sounding pop songs mixed with shoe-gaze style guitar distortion. On their 2005 album Pretty in Black, the duo cut back on the noise filled distortion to focus on clean cut melodies and silky smooth production. Sadly, the Raveonettes mask their stylistic retro pop under layers of dissonance and white noise on their third studio album Lust Lust Lust, and leave us with less than stellar results.

Every song on Lust Lust Lust is filled with the sharp, sometimes piercing, sound of static. It fills each crack in each song like an inescapable plague. At times it washes over the tracks like a gentle wave, allowing the surf-rock guitar plucking and hypnotic Everly Brothers style vocals to gently ride the wave of fuzz into a solid aesthetically pleasing journey. I’m sure this is what the duo was attempting to accomplish on this album and when they pull it off, such as on the tracks "Blitzed" and "With My Eyes Closed," it’s very listenable. More than not though, the distortion and static just seem to drown out the pleasurable vocals and sweet melodies, hitting each song too much like an overpowering tidal wave. // Read the rest

Neil Diamond Captivates Fans with Surprise Performance, Photos Available

By Jason Perry

Neil Diamond treated his dedicated fans to a historic show at the West Village's famed music venue The Bitter End last night, May 7, 2008. He performed a seven song set mixed with new songs from his latest album,  Home Before Dark, and classic material. Diamond captivated the lucky first 200 concert-goers who had queued-up since mid-morning upon learning of the secret show sponsored by MySpace.

Neil Diamond greeted the long line of fans stationed outside The Bitter End on Bleeker Street, saying hello and posing for pictures. Once inside the club, Diamond, backed by a small band consisting of members from both his studio and touring musicians, gave an energized acoustic performance of "Solitary Man", "Don't Go There", "Home Before Dark", "Pretty Amazing Grace", "Kentucky Woman", "Cherry, Cherry" and "Sweet Caroline". The club placed speakers in the windows during the performance allowing the hundreds of fans who couldn't get into the club to sing-along on the street and sidewalk and participate in this once in a lifetime event.

"I sang that song on this very stage 40 years ago," Diamond told the adoring crowd after a raucous performance of his 1967 hit "Kentucky Woman". Performance footage from The Bitter End show will be available on MySpace early next week.

Diamond's 27th studio album, Home Before Dark, was released on Tuesday, May 6. A world tour will begin in Rotterdam, Netherlands on May 24; returning to the US on July 19 (St. Paul, MN) hitting 37 cities stateside.
