You Probably Won't Get "Stuck In Love", But You Might Enjoy It Review

It’s not uncommon to find writers pop up in literature, but it is uncommon to find a family of writers on film (especially such young writers). In Stuck in Love, the Borgens are a budding literary family who are, inevitably, stuck in love. Patriarch Bill (Greg Kinnear) may be a mildly famous author, but his divorce from Erica (Jennifer Connelly) has left him adrift in his love life. His daughter Samantha (Lily Collins) is about to have her first novel published, but she is guarding her heart because she doesn’t want to turn out like her parents. And teenager Rusty (Nat Wolff) is too busy crushing on classmate Kate (Liana Liberato) to focus on his own writing projects.

The film plays out as three separate stories about the family members that slowly interweaves and impacts each other. Bill distracts himself from his remaining feelings for Erica by hooking up with married jogger Tricia (Kristen Bell), who helps make him over in an attempt to find him another wife. Samantha crosses paths with Louis (Logan Lerman) who “reek[s] of romance and good intentions,” the exact things she’s been avoiding (but needs). And Rusty uses his relationship with Kate to help rehabilitate her drug addiction, gifting her Stephen King’s It as encouragement (to be fair, King did overcome alcoholism and use that struggle as metaphor in his novels).

Stuck in Love is light-hearted but never falls into the derided romantic comedy genre. It remains a more heartfelt drama about love and relationships, and is especially engaging for writers who likes stories about other writers. Connelly and Collins especially stand out as a troubled mother-daughter pair who deliver their sometimes clichéd lines with just enough gusto to make them infinitely amusing. Stuck in Love is a delightful first film from writer/director Josh Boone, and fans of The Fault in Our Stars can rest easy knowing he’s helming that film adaptation.
