The Rocket Summer - Do You Feel Review

Multi-talented musician Bryce Avary (Yes, he is the whole band) is back with his major label debut Do You Feel. The 23 year old musical genius plays almost every instrument that you hear on the disc. This is more of a pop-filled affair than his previous albums, which makes it the perfect summer album. Throughout the CD, you will find yourself tapping your feet uncontrollably to the catchy piano laced, pop/rock tunes.

The album opener “Break It Out” is the perfect introduction to The Rocket Summer for those unfamiliar with the band. I dare anyone to listen to this song, and see if they aren’t moving their feet to the melody. The casual piano sounds during the song are reminiscent of Ben Folds. Where Avary sets himself apart from other piano based pop/rock singers and groups are with his layered vocals. The young singer has one of the most energetic voices I’ve heard, complete with incomparable falsetto.

The one thing you will notice almost immediately is how he can transform his voice throughout songs providing different tones and levels. He has a very soothing voice, even when he is screaming (which is very minimal).

The momentum continues into the next track “So Much Love”, which has a more prominent piano than the first track. Avary has a certain quality about his voice that allows him to screech with great control. The lyrics throughout the album are poetic, but it is especially notable in this song. This is also the only track that Avary works with other musicians, adding brass instruments to the upbeat song.

This album doesn’t know how to slow down. A few songs will start out slow, and you think you have found a ballad, but then the song takes off. The track “High Life Scenery” displays the level of skill that Bryce has in the percussion department, with a very nice introduction which builds into a guitar driven, piano fortified treat. “Colors” has a melody reminiscent of earlier R.E.M., and for Avary it works well. The only ballad on the album comes in the form of “Run to You” which feels almost spiritual, with the level of sincerity in Avary’s voice.

Many bands today write songs to write songs, but they don’t have any feeling in them. Thankfully, The Rocket Summer doesn’t fall into that mold. You can sense the emotion in every song. I am expecting big things from this artist in the future. Take a listen to this album and you will be glad you did.

"Do You Feel" is on sale July 17, 2007 from Island.
