I had recently watched The Village directed by M. Night Shyamalan and had made a post in the forums on how much I enjoyed the movie. One of the forum members recommended Unbreakable. I had never even heard of the movie before....until now.
I really wish I would have seen this a long time ago when it originally came out in 2000.
Unbreakable doesn't follow exactly the same outline as M. Night Shyamalan's other movies. This movie was much easier to follow and you could see how the movie was going to develop. There is still the tell tale "red" in M. Night Shyamalan's movies that are ever present along with a cameo of himself.
I'm fond of Samuel L. Jackson's acting abilities and thought he played his role well in this movie. There was plenty of background information about his character (Elijah Price) in the movie. Enough to establish a strong belief in the character.
This was by far not Bruce Willis' best performance. In fact even though I enjoy most movies Bruce Willis stars in, this was a mediocre performance. Partly due to the way the script was written. It really didn't give him an opportunity to fulfill his full acting potential in my opinion.
Camera manipulation and sound were OK in the movie. I watched the movie in 6.1 DTS although 5.1 or even plain stereo would suffice for this movie. Not much action or special effects that you would want or even need a good system to enjoy the sound.
The storyline of Unbreakable is pretty unique from anything I've seen lately and that made it all the more enjoyable. If you like good vs. evil stories or enjoy M. Night Shyamalan's work, you'll want to see this. Something to add to your rental queue for the future.
"Unbreakable" opens November 20, 2002 and is rated PG13. Drama, Thriller. Directed by M Night Shyamalan. Written by M. Night Shyamalan. Starring Samuel L Jackson, Bruce Willis, Robin Wright Penn, Spencer Treat Clark.
