Sideways Review

Sideways is about two old college buddies out for a week long road trip before one of them is due to get married. Along the way, they have an adventure that most men can relate to. The story itself isn't new, and neither is the way it's being told. The writer chooses to use many means of symbolism instead of a direct narrative. This is to be expected of a movie called Sideways. Wine is one of the main mediums used to help us read between the lines. The particular grapes, how to taste, and the over all appearance of the wine is made a key focus for how we get to move from one part of the story to another. The use of wine may be a tad over done, but if nothing else makes one feel like they could use a glass themselves.

I kept looking for a real story but instead got a glimpse of a full story. Like the writer wanted us to fill in the blanks for our selves and make it our own.

I find myself in an odd state. I enjoyed this film, but I'm not sure if I am able to recommend it. There are certain parts of the movie that just will not be the same if not seen in the theater, but for most if there is any interest then it can wait for video. Those moments where you cringe and go "Uh uh" and "Oh, No", be assured, so did the rest of the view audience and you are not alone.
