The Sarah Silverman Program is always hilarious and season 2, volume 2 is no exception. In this collection, Sarah is joined by her sister Laura (played by Laura Silverman, Sarah’s actual sister), Laura’s boyfriend Jay (Jay Johnston), her gay-bors (gay neighbors) Brian and Steve (Brian Posehn and Steve Agee), and her dog Doug for some of her wackiest adventures yet.
While this is clearly Sarah’s show, every character gets his or her turn in the limelight. For example, in the episode “Mongolian Beef” Steve creates short films which are so awesomely bad that he is chosen to make a reenactment film for Sarah’s trial against the country of Mongolia. Likewise, in “Pee,” Brian grows a freakishly long beard that gets stuck in the elevator machinery when he falls, but he won’t let the mall people cut it off. Jay confesses to a nocturnal emission on live television, while Laura struggles to trim her bush, as it reminds her of her mother who died in the 1970s. Even Doug gets some serious screen time when he saves Sarah’s life as she falls asleep with her head in the oven in the episode “Vow Wow.”
Of course we can’t forget about Sarah. This season, she gets high and leaves herself ridiculous voicemails; opts to be homeless after a run-in with Homeless Mike; discovers her dad isn’t really dead (or is he?) and tells Laura about it on a daytime talk show; runs down several Osama bin Laden “lookalikes”; and tries to marry her dog all in the typical over-the-top Silverman style. Plus, with guest stars like Garry Marshall, Lisa Loeb, Kristen Stewart, Todd Glass, and Christopher Eccleston, one of the guys that played Dr. Who, there’s a little something for everyone.
There’s even something for the musical lovers. At random intervals, Sarah bursts into song about what is happening, such as when she decides she needs a new set of friends because hers are too boring. Watching Sarah as a mermaid singing about wetting the bed, or later with the little girl who also pees herself crooning about dry mattresses, ice cream and jellybeans is pretty funny. And how can you not laugh out loud as Sarah is singing in her living room and a gospel choir pops up from behind her couch, robes and all? If you don’t find that amusing, I hope Sarah hits you with her car…just kidding. Sort of.
My favorite parts are the life lessons with Sarah that we get at the end of each episode. She’s usually sitting in bed with Doug, going over what happened that day, and then she comes out with some insane moral that no normal person would have gotten from the same scenario. It’s evident that Sarah thinks a little differently from the rest of us, and it’s easy to see that it makes for great, if not slightly offensive yet totally humorous television.
DVD Bonus Features
There are a TON of special features on this set. Aside from audio commentaries for every episode, disc one contains several featurettes such as “125 Slates,” “Steve and Sarah: Welcome to the Blog,” and the trailer for the show. I would definitely recommend watching “Lazer Rage,” “Working with Garry Marshall,” and “Sarah’s Baby’s Birth,” but if you have the time, all of the featurettes on this disc are fabulous and totally worth checking out. Disc two has less bonus material, although it still has audio commentaries for every episode. The only other content on disc two is the 3 webisodes where Sarah finds a magical purse that grants wishes, Brian and Steve have an adventure in outer space, and one starring a bull.
