Some historical documentaries treat the past as a relic, some decrepit husk of time long gone to be trudged through so that future generations will be aware of the forces that shaped their coming. There’s no sense in blaming academics for sometimes doing their job without a hint of excitement, but while history can read dry and still be informative on the page, on the screen it withers within minutes. Luckily, KJB: The Book That Changed the World is a vibrant, exciting look at an act that 400 years ago gave the world one of the defining works of theology and literature – the King James Bible.
John Rhys-Davies (a legendary character actor, probably best known to modern audiences as Gimli in The Lord of the Rings trilogy) is our narrator for this potent mix of documentary and recreation. Rhys-Davies’ presence is as important to the film’s success as the subject matter, since the actor’s commanding tones and genuine enthusiasm help propel the narration along and segue way well into the narrative. Given that this appears to be a reasonably budgeted production, the recreation segments are outstanding, well acted and photographed with a great use of space. The narration may move the film along and fit the pieces into place but it’s my guess that edited together, these scenes could form an above-average historical drama, not out of place on HBO or Showtime (not Starz, they wouldn’t be into this sort of thing).
Historical liberties are taken here and there to fastback the narrative and create tension but the idea at the heart of the film is important – the fact that beyond a monumental event for Christianity, the King James Bible came at a turbulent time and represented a shift that would affect the world in due course. This is how history can be taught via entertainment – as a force that is still acting on our personal selves day to day, for better or for worse.
